Quick question -- how "independent" is the Levanda center? http://www.levada.ru Many people have pointed out that their poll matches the official results very closely, and they are apparently well regarded in the west. Any thoughts?

Quick answer: nobody knows. Levada center is probably the most independent in Russia. However, most of the reports, in my opinion, deal with small data sample thus introducing large uncertainty.
For instance, in the analysis made just before election, the Levada center asked about 1.5 thousands of people in 45 regions in total. But that's only 30 people in single region! They estimate uncertainty to be 3% but it's for sure underestimation. Moreover, region sizes weren't taken into account.
By the way, yesterday report from Levada center shows that only 32% of Moscow voters actually voted for United Russia (compare with official 46%). This result match VCIOM exit-poll result for Moscow and also independent volunteer observers' results. My analysis is also gives something similar.
