The American election couldn't be over soon enough for me. If I do send away for my absentee ballot then I will probably vote for Obama but I have a really difficult time accepting he's the saviour that so many believe. It really puts across how absurd electoral campaigns are. Realistically you can promise whatever you like because if you're elected president then you most likely won't be held to task. I keep thinking of the advertisement for the Hal Needham action movie "MegaForce" that ran in comics in the 1980's with its giant slogan "deeds not words". In the 1996 election Bush senior's catchphrase was the whole, "read my lips, no news taxes" and after he was elected raised taxes. A lot of the topic du jour during the 2000 election was social security reform and a "lock box" to ensure that it wouldn't collapse. How much of that was actually relevant to Dubya's presidency? Also this entire election is like Star Trek Voyager. Both traditionally cut diversity a bit short but when it became sellable they reached so much that they overshot in an attempt to outdo themselves. It shouldn't matter that the person is black or a woman any more than it should matter that the person is white or a man. Imitating your oppressor is not a step forward. It's also loathsome all the propaganda that each sides supporters spew forth. How can someone have so much venom for someone they don't know and has no actual effect on their lives? Yeah, Palin's daughter may be pregnant and trashy but who cares? If you really think that matters then act accordingly but don't be smug about your life turning out better than you judge hers to be. It just all seems to be as much Big Brother as an election. Did you know that Obama has a lot of the same letters as Osama? Did you know that Palin tried to ban a long list of books, except that several items on the list were not published when she was elected in 1996?
