Eugene V (for those not keeping count, I am IV) graduated from high school this month. We weren't certain he would because severe senioritis put him in a bit of jeopardy. We were waiting for word on completion of final projects in a few classes (that eventually were completed...and just in time). We didn't receive final word until the Friday afternoon before Sunday's (3 June) graduation ceremony! So now, congratulations are in order (but frankly, in part, shame on him; I don't know how one does not do well in high school).

Kids are challenging. I'm proud of the lifestyle choices my two have made--no smoking or other self-destructive habits, a respectful approach to their teenage significant others, a relative minimum of cheesy pop music, etc.--but I do wish they would give some priority to doing their homework.

Wee Gene's birthday is now approaching, and we're thinking of combining graduation/birthday gifts into a singular kayak. I am fond of canoeing, having a relatively big tripping boat with a 1,200-lb-capacity hull. In some places in some summers on the day job, it has served as my primary vehicle. Wee Gene is less enamored of high-capacity hulls than myself. He does not own a kayak, but is fond of renting them, especially where we vacation near the north shore of Lake Huron. I'm eyeing Old Town's Loon as what looks to be a decent intro to the sport. Any with some experience, your thoughts?
