I hate drugs...but I like guitars

Oct 05, 2006 18:09

I just don't do drugs, legal or otherwise (unless dark beers count...I do dark beers). When I had my wisdom teeth surgically carved from my jawbones, e.g., I took one of the prescription pain killers afterwards, and was so completely wiped out by it that I decided I preferred the discomfort and took no more. In preparation for my trip to Costa Rica, I'm on anti-malarial drugs. That crap makes me feel absolutely ill! As a result, I missed work on Monday...and that's another thing I'm just not likely to do. I suspect my unwillingness to indulge in medication makes me a little more susceptible to some side effects. Ah well, only eight more weeks of anti-malarial drug to go.

Went to hear the Brazilian Guitar Quartet at Ohio Wesleyan on Tuesday: all transcription given the relative scarcity of dedicated repertoire for a quartet of two 6-string guitars and two 8-string "Brahms" guitars. The performance was very nice, especially excerpts from Albeniz's Iberia that opened the program and the variations by Miranda (originally for wind quintet). The artists are gracious and personable, and at least two of them have fair command of English (which makes up for my complete inability with Portuguese). Matanya and Jan de Kloe were there, and I enjoyed their company.

Speaking of Jan, here's a recent e-mail I sent to my list:

Of course, as recently mentioned, the 16th concert season of the Columbus Guitar Society launches this very Saturday, 8 pm, 7 October 2006. Guitarist Jan de Kloe will open the season at Capital University's Huntington Recital Hall with a refined and intriguing repertoire spanning the renaissance to the 20th c. General admission is only $15, $10 for students or CGS members. I'm taking attendance, CGS ensemble members. Be there or carry the barely-tolerable shame of knowing that I know you weren't there! See the web site for details and for word of the rest of our exciting 2006-07 season which includes the Guitar Foundation of America victory tour, a recital by one of the most important living composers/performers on the instrument, and the richly sonorous combination of viola and guitar.

My official duty to remind covered, here are a couple other area events that may interest.

Early Music in Columbus opens its season on Friday night (i.e., tomorrow), 7:30 pm, at the acoustically delicious Pontifical College Josephinum with the Catacoustic Consort playing music of the French baroque. This becomes pluck-relevant in featuring Mr. Dave Walker on theorbo (for those unfamiliar, theorbo is a huge bass lute). Check the Early Music site for admission details.

The Dayton Mandolin Orchestra opens its 3rd season on Sunday afternoon, October 8, 2006, 2:30 PM, at Normandy United Methodist Church, 450 W. Alex-Bell Road, Dayton OH 45459, (937)433-1636. At-The-Door general admission by suggested donation (Adults: $10 ュ Kids under 12: $5). For more information, visit the Dayton Mandolin Orchestra online or call (937)238-GDAE.

Hope to see you there.
