I had a totally nerd-out moment the other day as I was cleaning Lydia’s room. The majority of her small toys are held in a toy organizer - one of those wooden jobs with the multi-colored bins - and when I clean, I love to sort the toys into the bins by type. For example, all My Little Pony stuff goes in one bin, all musical instruments in another, etc. There are always more kinds of toys than there are numbers of bins, and so you find yourself making leaps of reasoning; toy classification gets very subjective. It was as I debated whether her little Barbie flip phone should go in the bin with her walkie-talkies (as they are both communication devices) or in her dress-up jewelry (because she uses it as an accessory when dressing up, no different than her 2,000 necklaces or fancy headbands) that I knew exactly how much the librarian I am.
Doug and I just finished the first disc of the HBO miniseries John Adams, and it was amazing. I don’t think I ever really considered how dire the situation of our founding fathers was; in my mind, they’ve always been a group of intellectuals, smug in the superiority of their ideals. I never knew that King George declared that they were to be sentenced to death. How did I not know that? Did I really spend that much time totally spaced out or asleep in my classes as a kid? Or was it negligence on the part of my teachers? Perhaps if I had ever had a history teacher who had chosen that subject because of an innate passion and not just because the school system required that their athletic coaches taught in addition to coaching? Hell, I’m sure it was both. Anyway, the series is great, and Laura Linney’s performance as the forward-thinking, feminist, ever-competent Abigail Adams is inspired.
I cannot say as much for the 4th installment on the Twilight series. Breaking Dawn has been a real disappointment. I’m set to finish it today, and I’m feeling pretty let down about the whole thing. It’s not as if it is serious literature, or even that well-written, but I have really loved the series prior to this latest installment, and have found it compelling beyond belief. All of that led me to expect more than #4 has delivered. I won’t speak further on the subject as there are people on my friend’s list who are currently reading the series.
