Chapter Seventeen - The Plan
For Dr Kim Jaejoong, now fully recovered from the bindings of his own mind and other injuries, tonight was one of those times where there was simply too much on his mind to allow for a good night’s sleep. Absentmindedly, Jaejoong began to trace circles on the tanned skin of Yunho’s chest, causing the man next to him to rouse from his slumber.
In their hurry to get to bed in the earlier hours of the night, the curtains had been left undrawn and the pale moonlight streaming in from the windows allowed Yunho to gauge the expression on his lover’s face.
“What’s wrong?” Yunho trapped Jaejoong’s fingers in his own as they began to wonder towards a large scar along Yunho’s shoulder that was still in the process of healing.
Jaejoong sighed and buried his nose in the nook of Yunho’s neck, drowning himself in the latter’s warm, musky scent. It calmed him as memories of that night on the artificial island fought to resurface.
A month has already passed since that event. A long, drawn-out month that, in Jaejoong’s opinion, perhaps passed a little too peacefully.
Whatever their enemies had planned with the attack on the island had been unsuccessful. That alone more or less signals that not a moment in their current lives is safe until they had this whole mess sorted out.
Jaejoong couldn’t remember much after their steamy bout of reunion sex on the submarine. He and Yunho had stumbled back to the control room and basically passed out in each other’s arms...after all, one of them had been shot and the other just had a lifetime of memories crammed back into his head. In the days that followed, their three friends had been cleaning up their mess while the two of them were hospitalized. Jaejoong felt particularly guilty for not being to help, especially towards Changmin, who had been doing the bulk of the work since Junsu and Yoochun tend to slip out unannounced. No prizes for guessing what they were really up to.
Even after both he and Yunho were discharged from hospital to rest at home, Jaejoong had been ignoring the feelings of insecurity that had been nudging at him to think of a way out of his problem. “Your current life ends”...the Memory’s words were constantly playing in his head...haunting him. What next step did he have to take in order to end this madness regarding SMT?
“What’s wrong?” Yunho repeated, pulling Jaejoong closer.
It has become a ritual for Jaejoong to assure one Jung Yunho that he wasn’t going to loose his memories again. When he does things like sleeping ten minutes more than usual or staying silent after a question, Yunho tends to start panicking. The Jung Enterprise had more or less been handed over to Tiffany (who had smothered Jaejoong with tears and hugs the moment she set eyes on him) as Yunho was spending every moment possible to make sure he never leaves his lover’s side. Jaejoong wasn’t about to burden Yunho with his worries for their future when the latter was already so on edge about anything related to him.
“Nothing’s wrong, just appreciating how sexy you are,” Jaejoong smiled, partly speaking the truth.
“Don’t you normally appreciate my sexiness a little more physically?” Yunho raised an eyebrow.
Jaejoong laughed, wondering if Yunho has already seen through his little pretence. If anyone was to know what was going on in Kim Jaejoong head, it would be Yunho and knowing Yunho, the young businessman has most likely already planned ahead of Jaejoong already. Regardless, it was time to divert the topic.
“You are spending too much time with Kim Heechul,” Jaejoong wrinkled his nose in distaste.
A day after their escape from enemy radars, Changmin had ordered a group of their men to detour back to the island to gather clues as to the people who plotted the massacre that night. The team did not return with any solid evidence, but they did manage to find one battered Kim Heechul, unconscious in one of the island’s luxury boats. The moment Yunho was allowed out of his hospital bed, he had gone off to Heechul’s ward and spent an entire day there without returning. Jaejoong would’ve gone as well, at least to thank the man for helping them out, had he not received the message that “Heechul-nim” did not want to see him. After that, Yunho tend to head out once or twice a week to spend some long hours with Heechul...much to Jaejoong’s displeasure.
“You can’t possibly be complaining about that,” Yunho immediately frowned at him, “We owe him our lives, Jaejoong! As a friend it is my duty to hang out with him once in a while anyway, plus he is a source of help if nothing else. I’m not sure if you’ve noticed, but you are the one I am having sex with and spending the majority of my time with.”
“I know,” Jaejoong pouted, “It still doesn’t mean you have to go spend so much time with that man.”
“Grow up sweetheart,” Yunho sighed, tweaking his lover’s nose, “I’m sure it doesn’t take any effort for that big brain of yours to know that I am very willing your belonging. I am aware that Heechul still has lingering feelings for me, but even he knows it’s a fruitless longing. Nevertheless he is still my friend and right now he can provide us with help, so please put up with it, at least for me.”
“...Fine...just for you though,” Jaejoong sighed, he was right, Yunho had already started planning by asking people like Kim Heechul for help. “But if he does anything funny, you’ll all get to find out just how hard a nerd like me can punch.”
Yunho was certain, as he pressed his lips against Jaejoong’s, that he did not want to find out.

“Hyung, you are procrastinating.”
“I know.”
It was Saturday night and as pre-memory loss ritual, Jaejoong was at a high-class restaurant with Yunho and Changmin. Since Changmin lived very far away from home, Jaejoong and Yunho had took it upon themselves to create a family environment for him, Saturday night was therefore family dinner night and although Jaejoong was very happy to be able to have these occasions again, he was finding Changmin’s nagging a little irritating.
Yunho had barely just excused himself to use the bathroom when Changmin brought up the subject of SMT again. The young man wanted something done about the problem immediately, but his hyung appeared less than interested. Changmin was also aware that Jaejoong was absolutely unwilling to speak of the topic with Yunho in the room, and with Yunho being in close proximity with Jaejoong at all times, it was hard to gather a response from the genius.
“You’re going to start ignoring all my questions from now on right?” Changmin sighed, rubbing the back of his neck.
“Yes,” Jaejoong turned to stare out the window as he sipped on his wine.
“Fine,” Changmin frowned, “I’m just going to tell you for the last time that I have no idea what protective measures to take anymore and if we don’t start some offence of our own soon, I don’t know what choices we would be left with. So please hyung, at least answer this: do you have a plan?”
Jaejoong was pleased to know that he did have a sliver of a plan this time round, but at the same time he wasn’t quite prepared to give his ideas any deeper thought. The situation and the consequences were just too unclear to him and his ability to think definitely was not what it used to be - getting brain washed didn’t exactly increase his IQ. However, one look at Changmin’s tired form and the stress that did not belong in the eyes of someone so young, Jaejoong felt it was time for him to take risks.
“Here is not the best place,” Jaejoong said slowly, after a long pause, “How soundproof are the headquarter labs again?”
Changmin’s eyes immediately lit up and like a child he sat forward eagerly. “That’s not something you need to worry about, hyung. Whatever the a top-class secret service has, we have better.”
Jaejoong smiled, that was more like his Changmin.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Junsu sat back with a little tilt of his head as he regarded his two friends before him. Jaejoong was staring at his computer monitor with a look of blankness that Junsu had never seen on the genius’ face before. In contrast, Changmin sat next to Jaejoong, looking at his hyung with so much admiration that Junsu was tempted to tape his childish expression and use it against him the next time he tries to be cheeky.
During the time Jaejoong had spent with Yunho, refusing to come into the office or even bring up the subject, Junsu had seriously began to worry about their future despite his efforts. The problem with SMT was not yet solved. The enemies have information and copies of the prototype, no doubt their own scientists would’ve developed the dangerous transmitter into a near perfect weapon already. All they needed now was evidently the activation code and now that they have successfully revived Jaejoong’s memories, he was their number one target yet again.
Just minutes before, Jaejoong had finally let them into his plans for a counterattack. However, the Jaejoong who was always ten steps ahead of everyone else, was for once leaving everything up to chance. His ideas were derived from gut feelings and hunches rather than facts and figures. His confidence level was low and for a man who always visualizes the end product first, he had no idea what would happen if the plan was to be carried out. As much as Junsu wanted to help right now, they could do nothing but wait for the events to unfold and then to act accordingly.
“Why the long face?” Junsu asked, as he watched Jaejoong’s face change, “Are the codes faulty?”
Jaejoong frowned up at him and gestured for Junsu to go read his monitor. Rather than codes, Junsu soon discovered that what Jaejoong had really been mulling over for the past hour was a detailed spy account of Jung Yunho’s interactions with Kim Heechul. What displeased Jaejoong was most likely the frequency of which “touching” was mentioned.
“Why do you bother stalking the man who worships the dirt you walk on?” Junsu gave his friend a look, “Or rather, shouldn’t you be more concerned about other things right this moment?”
“That little Heechul bitch better hope that we never meet or I’ll make sure that he has something extremely unpleasant stuck up that slutty asshole of his for the rest of his life,” Jaejoong threatened, “I should’ve drowned him and his ridiculous pink bath cap when I had the chance back at the hot pools. Can’t Yunho think of better ways to gather information than to rely on the crazy, multiple-personality drag queen?”
“Isn’t step one of the plan: to wait for Yunho-hyung to find out who is behind all this?” Changmin commented.
“And why is it that we can’t tell Yunho-hyung again?” Junsu added.
Jaejoong began swiveling in his chair, “Because if Yunho knows that I have a plan, then he will want to be part of the plan, so much the eventually he’d want to kick me out of my own plan to ‘keep me safe’. I think he never really got over the fact he wasn’t there for us the first time we were attacked and now he is doing everything he can to make sure we are safe this time round.”
“And you are being cruel by using him like a pawn in your intricate game of chess,” Junsu’s face softened.
“Aren’t you doing the same with Yoochun?” Jaejoong snorted, “Making him stay by Yunho so he’s out of this as well. Aren’t we doing it for the same reason?”
At that moment, the door to the lab flung open and in strode a stormy-faced Yunho followed by Kim Heechul. Unhappy with the intruder to their little circle, Jaejoong made a big show of holding out his arms to be pampered by Yunho who indulged him despite the situation. Heechul made a gagging motion behind Yunho’s back while Jaejoong controlled the urge to stick his tongue out at the man, settling with a bitchy smirk instead.
“Sweetheart, I have to tell you that I’ve been doing some research behind your back,” Yunho said.
“What? Really?” Jaejoong faked his surprise. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Changmin and Junsu turn away. If only Yunho knew what they were doing behind his back.
“It’s nothing big, but it seems we were able to make contact with the attackers at the island,” Yunho frowned, “In fact, they requested a video call right now. Changmin, put them through.”
Junsu nodded at Jaejoong. It was exactly as the latter had predicted - when the enemies are ready to continue with a new plan, they would be the first to make a move.
As the large monitor in the centre of the room flickered to life, Yunho moved to shield Jaejoong’s body with his own. Jaejoong let him, leaning his head against Yunho’s strong back. If everything was to go accordingly, what would happen to them? Will they be able to end this mess and return to their peaceful lives? Or would this be the last of such moments?
“...ends.”
The call connected and the picture of the people who had been causing them so much trouble and pain in these past few years formed on the monitor. Jaejoong gripped onto Yunho’s shirt and closed his eyes just as he felt the soft gasp of shock run through his lover’s body.
