The news about Ron Paul’s 1990s newsletters and the hateful, racist rhetoric they contained is not particularly surprising to me. Disappointing, but not surprising.
I never exactly threw my support behind Paul because I disagree with him about foreign policy, and I think that’s rather important. Nonetheless, I thought his campaign could be a Symbol of Hope or somesuch nonesense, being as non-mainstream as it was and yet gaining so much momentum through the Internet, such that I almost wanted to forget what was being promoted because I liked the how so much.
Nonetheless, when I moved down here and started seeing homemade Ron Paul signs, my enthusiasm waned. Berrien County is an area where the
John Birch Society remains an active political movement and anything that’s popular here should be regarded by the rest of society as intrinsically suspect… I guess being that close to Indiana is bound to have bad effects.
