Dario really wants to get rid of our dishwashers lol they kind of really suck. We'd been missing the can opener for a while, Dario and Edgar were getting frustrated punching holes in the tops to open cans, and I found the stupid opener... in the server station, where it doesn't belong. Dario says they have serious attitude problems. Makes sense, seeing as they're brothers. They put stuff away in the wrong places, which is really annoying.
Ralph cut me at 6:30 today. I asked Eloy if he was okay with that and he kinda shrugged and was like, yeah sure. Which meant he wasn't super cool with it or anything, so I told him and Ralph to call me back if they needed me. I wasn't super happy leaving either because it was too early to know if we would be busy or not, and I think it's kind of shitty to leave Eloy to deal with it himself just because Ralph made a hasty call. Ralph called me back at 7:30 at Eloy's request, which made me really smug because it's like HAH I WAS RIGHT. We weren't like swamped or anything with the two of us there, but we were both sufficiently busy, so Eloy would have been super swamped were he alone. They'd just seated a couple big tables I think is why Eloy asked Ralph to call me back, because he knew he'd be in deep shit soon.
I had to do most of happy hour myself which is fine because it's mostly handrolls, but then I had a couple orders of nigiri and I'm like SHIT because I can't really do nigiri. I can if I must, but not well. And I was about to do what I have to do, I had the maguro sliced and the rice formed, when I heard Eloy's voice in the back, and I almost sobbed with exaggerated relief. I really wish I could do nigiri because I can do sashimi if I must, it's just slicing fish (though of course it requires a lot of skill in cutting fish), but nigiri I literally cannot do it.
So this couple walks in after a couple big parties have been seated, and somebody tells them to wait like 5 minutes for a table, we're actually keeping a bit of a tight staff on tonight because it's kind of slow. Craig mutters to me that they're a total pain, the last time they were here they'd declared they were never coming back but apparently "never" doesn't actually mean "not ever" like I thought it did. Of course as Ralph seats them at the sushi bar they already have begun bitching about how they have to wait even though it seems like there are seats, and you know what, just because you see a table without people sitting at it doesn't mean it is available. They were bitching and moaning, Ralph was placating them hilariously, he was thanking them for being so patient, not many people are as patient as they are, I almost had to duck under the counter to laugh. He's very good at keeping his cool when people are angrily bitching at him. Craig told me to make sure to take their order because he had no intention of speaking to them more than he absolutely had to. Eloy took their order because I wasn't really excited about helping them, and when they left he was like, thanks for coming, like he usually does and they were like "what?" and he repeated himself and I wasn't paying super close attention but I don't recall hearing a response from them. To Craig I was like "hahaha wow they're so rude" and he was like "if I were Ralph I'd decide it's not worth the trouble and tell them to go away". None of us were impolite to them, but Craig was really annoyed about them and made faces when customers couldn't see him.
Then our last table of the night was a young mother and her two kids and they were so adorable. They were pretty young but they ordered a lot of their own food. The mom told me she was really happy to see a female sushi chef. Then they ordered sashimi and I had to go get a man to help me lol. Eloy cut some decorative fruit for the kids and they got super excited, it was so cute.
It was a good day. I got decent hours, got to swoop in and save the day, and laugh at Craig's pain.
