So I got into College of William and Mary law today, bringing my number of acceptances so far to 3 (the other two being Boalt Hall (UC Berkeley) and Baylor). Even though Berkeley is a much better school, I still felt like it was an accomplishment to get into William and Mary, they are ranked 27th out of 191 ABA approved law schools and they reject 80% of the people who apply.
However, when I called my Dad to tell him the news, my bubble was burst. He says, "So what are they ranked?" and I say "27". He says "What's Berkeley?" and I say "11". He goes, oh that's a no brainer then, plus William and Mary is in Virginia, you don't want to go there. What will be interesting is when Stanford comes calling. I tell him that I have no plans to go to Stanford (after doing some research I became convinced their high rank is artificially inflated by its reputation, and I didn't like their overall tone in things they've written to promote themselves). He asks "what if they give you a full ride?". I tell him that Stanford doesn't give full rides. He starts to argue with me that they do too, because he's heard of athletes getting full rides there. Ticked off as all hell, because once again he has no idea what he's talking about, but acting like he knows everything, I snap at him that Stanford Law School has admissions policies completely different from the undergrad's. He just kinda gets quiet and the conversation ends.
Why is is that parents are such a killjoy sometimes?
