No Lochness Monster Here [Arrival, OTA]

“Maybe you don’t get to. Maybe the leader, the girl who brings it all together, is the one that has to give that up.”

“Yeah. Yay me.”Buffy was having serious doubts about whether she had done the right thing. Even Xander’s pep talk couldn’t bring her out of the funk, and it had been a really good pep talk. She hated the fact that all his pep ( Read more... )

She'd run five miles so far. Five miles and she still couldn't shake whatever it was that had her feeling like she did. It was annoying in a way Faith couldn't even begin to describe. Realizing that the only thing she'd managed to accomplish was to work up one hell of a thirst, Faith decided to grab a quick drink from one of the local shops rather than go back to her room. Beach street was as busy as it ever was and one of the girls from the club called out to her. Cindy or Sandy something was doing a little shopping, but she really wasn't in the mood to deal with a bimbo, well meaning or not. In her bid to pretend she hadn't noticed the other woman, Faith nearly smacked into the back of a very familiar looking blonde. Her eyes narrowed in recognition and she bit back a small groan. This was something she'd been dreading since learning that the island could pull people from all different times.

"Buffy?"

Buffy spun around, her eyes wide as she looked at Faith. Okay, so so far no cheese guy, no first Slayer. Nothing that screamed this being a dream. Other than Buffy was somewhere beachy with Faith. She reached out to poke the brunette in the shoulder, checking to see if she felt real. "Faith?"

Ok, there was no stabbing. So far so good. "Yeah, B. Live and in color." It was the only thing she could think to say and she suddenly realized how much easier it was to welcome strangers than people you actually knew.

"Okay, okay... I can work with this. You're real, and I'm guessing I'm real..." Buffy touched her fingers to her face just in case there was some kind of strange mud mask, but there wasn't. There was just the bandages covering her wounds. She wondered if they'd healed yet, because she really didn't fancy looking like a kindy kid's bad collage for much longer. "So does that mean this place is real? Or is this one of those really real dreams?"

"Whatever happened to your face is still there." People never told you how it really was in dreams. Might as well get that right out of the way and dispel the theory. "And yeah, this place is real. Nothing mystical from what I can tell, and I've been here a while. Place is called Etre Libre. Magic island that pulls you in when you need to escape."

She knew she probably sounded standoffish, but she didn't know exactly what to expect from this Buffy. The fact that fists weren't involved narrowed things down by a few years, but if everything she'd heard was true, this Buffy could've come from anytime after she herself had gotten to Etre. "What's the last thing you remember?"

"All hope being abandoned in favour of wallowing in a giant pool of misery?" Buffy responded as she raised her eyebrows a little. She looked at Faith, studying the other Slayer quietly as she tried to work out if maybe this was some in-joke she wasn't actually in on. "Me and Xander were watching the girls train, he was trying to give me some pep."

Buffy touched her face again, the bandages moving as she frowned. "Twilight happened to my face. I was trying to give Satsu some extra pointers when crashed the tutorial and we got into it. He threw part of a church at me! Who does that?!" She huffed out a breath before she glanced away, the events replaying through her mind. Then she seemed to pause, her head cocked to the side. "Magical island? Wait, there aren't midgets yelling about planes, are there?"

"Twilight? What the hell is a twilight? And who is Satsu?" Faith frowned, obviously she was missing something-- a few somethings. "No midgets, least none that I've seen."

"Big bad, wears a mask, total ass-clown," Buffy said as she filled Faith in as vaguely as possible. "And Satsu's one of the new Slayers. She wears cinnamon lip gloss, and woke me up from a magical coma with true love's kiss." She held up a hand. "Yeah, I know. And we thought Sunnydale would be the end of the freakishness. Apparently there's a whole world of weirdness complete with fairytales being brought to life, just in more of a lesbian flavoured way. Not that there's anything wrong with that."

"A mask? Since when does the big bad wear a damn mask?" Wow, she really was out of the loop. What Buffy said after was what really caught her attention and she had to try and stifle her laugh. Faith failed, miserably. "Gettin' down with the girl on girl, B? I think I might be proud considerin' I never thought you'd have it in you."

"Since he's a total ass clown?" Buffy suggested as she raised her eyebrows, looking at Faith like the Slayer was a little slow. "I guess he's just trying to be extra mysterious, I don't know. And hey, you know, I happen to have a lot of things in me."

Faith only raised an eyebrow at the last part. It was almost too easy. "Really, B? Thought I was supposed to be the whore out of the two of us."

Buffy stayed quiet for a moment as she tried to work out what she'd said. "Ah... wait, maybe that didn't come out quite right. Not that I mean you're a whore either! I mean, if you are that's totally okay, and I will not judge, because hello! Vampire whore here. Um, anyway... ah, island?"

Faith nod, holding back her laughter. "Island. No mojo, no big bad, great escape. It's special in all the ways a special magical island can be."

Buffy shifted her weight on her feet, still looking a little embarrassed. It wasn't like she'd wanted to blurt out anything in front of Faith, but she was massively thrown out by the whole relocation thing. "Does this mean I'm stuck? Like, not even Willow's magical mojo can pull me out? Do they even know I'm gone?"

"Nah, don't think Red'd be any good to you. I mean, did you guys even notice I was gone? Way this place is meant to work, according to the popular sources, powers that be-- whatever you want to call it, it's like you blink out. You only get to go back when you've gotten what you need or some shit." Faith shrugged. "You don't lose any time back in your life, probably aren't even missed."
