[OTA, TAG CHASE, FOX, ROB] Assumption makes an ass out of you... and some guy named "Umption."

Jul 05, 2009 10:03

House had been sitting up in his office when his pager went off. It was Chase. He couldn't tell if his page meant Fox was taking Rob off of the life support, or if this meant Rob was awake and dancing on the tables. House was pretty sure the former was going to be the one he was going to have to deal with ( Read more... )

This time, Rob woke himself up coughing again. His throat was so dry and raw, and it almost felt like he was learning to breathe all over again. His hand was feeling blindly but slowly around the bed beside his hips before he could drag his eyes open a little again. When they opened, his hand stilled, finding her sitting beside him. Was it just another dream? He was dead, wasn't he? "Fox," he got out this time, his breathless voice scratchy and hoarse. His fingers connected with hers and behind the oxygen mask, he smiled. "Hey..."

Fox sat up as she tightened her grip a little on Rob's fingers and returned the smile. "Hey, soldier." While he'd been sleeping again she'd been lost in her own thoughts. "At least you remember me."

The man with the cane wasn't even on Fox's radar. If it was the mysterious House, he could wait. She hadn't seen him at all during Rob's illness, Chase the only doctor she'd had contact with. She gave him the briefest of glances over her shoulder before her attention was fixed on Rob again.

For a moment, House's eyes locked with Fox's. He could tell she barely left Rob's side since the last time he stood outside the room. She was still scared. Rightly so, he argued, but he saw that she knew Rob wasn't home free just yet. House wasn't exactly the Gone With the Wind type; not believing unconditional love was ever really unconditional, and he couldn't help but wonder if Fox would still love Rob just the same if she had to spend the next fifty years wiping drool away from his face. At the very least, Rob was going to be on quite a few medications for the next six months if he walked away from this otherwise in perfect health.

He stepped over to the bed, taking his penlight out of his pocket and leaning over Rob, checking his pupil response. Even, responsive... generally a good sign. House took a quick look over at Fox before gesturing toward her and locking eyes with Rob. "I know you know her name... You remember yours?"

Rob really wanted to grab the light and stick it up House's ass. Didn't he realise how bright it was? He still didn't have the strength for much of anything right now, though, so he settled on a small annoyed frown. "Of course I do. Why wouldn't I?" he said, still sounding much like he had just been strangled. It wasn't even a cool porno voice, it was just Marge Simpson-esque. For some reason his mind took a leap to his colleague Keith. That had been some damn dream and he felt a spike of panic shoot through him. He looked at House, then to Fox. "Rob. Rob Laird." This time it came out like a rough whisper.

Fox frowned a little, wondering if she'd imagined the change in Rob's eyes that had nothing to do with the light. If this guy was going to make Rob uncomfortable, she had no qualms with kicking him out. Forcefully.

She gave Rob a reassuring smile, and brushed her fingers through his hair. "Satisfied?" she asked the doctor.

"Not quite," he answered Fox without taking his eyes from Rob. He was used to both hostile patients and their significant others alike. "You know where you are?" House asked him, pulling back and clicking the light off, slipping it back into his jacket pocket as he noted the flutter on the heart monitor.

Rob frowned as a heavy confusion tried to take over his brain and make his head ache like he had too much to drink. "The island..." he murmured, and then his eyes were back on Fox, like she somehow might have the answers. He had to close his eyes for a moment and rest his head more heavily against the pillow, but he was even more confused when he opened them again. "I'm dead," he added uncertainly.

Fox just gave a small nod to indicate he'd been right about the island. At least he still remembered her, and where he was. That was encouraging. At his last words though, Fox stiffened, her fingers halting in their attentions to his hair. There was no way he could have known about dying back home was there?

"No, I'm dead. You've just been in a coma," she told him, another quick glance at House. She had no idea if Chase had told the man about the article, or not. She also didn't think Rob would be able to process the revelation yet.

How... would Rob know about dying back home? Was he just confused here? He shared a glance with Fox, clearing his throat and shaking his head. The man just had brain surgery. He didn't need to send him into any unnecessary crashes.

Pressing his lips together in a tight smile, he shook his head at Rob. "I know most people tend to think I'm some sort of God or something, but I figured it implied a lot less if I came to you rather than you coming to me. You would have been dead if I hadn't found the fact that you had Disseminated Nocardiosis. Chase was ready to be an idiot and shut you off. Good thing you and I worked out that 'come out of the coma at the last minute' move," he winked at Rob, leaning over and pretending to whisper, "Just like we planned!"

Rob was looking up at House uncertainly. "Ha, yeah..." he said hesitantly, not really sure if he was joking or not. "No, I..." It was on the tip of his tongue to correct the whole death issue, only he didn't exactly know what he was going to say. It must have just been a bad dream. Did coma people dream? They must do. He thought he maybe had small recollections of people being with him when he was asleep, a hand holding his, someone talking to him, but he must have imagined that too. It was hazy, at best.

He was still looking at House with a mix of fear and confusion, though he was trying to hide it. He didn't say anything else at first before he glanced at Fox. Did she sing to him, or had he dreamed that too? More silent moments passed before he spoke again. "What's that?"

"What's what?" Fox couldn't help but ask, her attention still on Rob's face as she watched all the little changes in his expression. She wanted to tell him about the car, and the article, and the divorce papers but it was all too much for him to take in now. She had to be patient for a little bit longer.

"Bacterial infection," House answered, assuming that's what Rob was asking about. "Apparently, you're a great buffet table. Started in your lungs, disseminated to your heart, and then attacked your brain. If we hadn't caught it in time, those little bacterial nazis would have ruptured the abscess inside your head and gone all Kristallnacht on your cerebral cortex."

Rob seemed disoriented, which was understandable after just coming out of a coma, but it was at least a good idea to be cautious. "Follow my finger," he instructed, pointing his finger to the ceiling, slowly moving it from side to side.

Rob managed to do what was requested, but it was slow and made his head spin a little. "My head is his killing me," he admitted. Though, if what House had just told him, was it any damn wonder? An infection in his lung would cause coughing, right? Obviously. He hadn't forgotten how sick he had been before coming to the hospital. He remembered most of that, but it seemed anything immediately preceding the apparent coma was lost. His brain must have been close to mush by that point. Actually, he wasn't even sure if he knew what a 'cerebral cortex' was, but bacterial Nazis attacking it couldn't be a good thing.

"I didn't catch it on the island," he found himself saying, even if he didn't know why. "Did I make everyone else here sick?" He turned his head a little to try and see Peter in the bed over, but it was empty and his heart immediately shot up into his throat. Did he kill Peter?! "Where is he?!" he gasped, panicked, barely hearing the monitors when they started beeping rapidly again.

"Rob, calm down," Fox urged him gently as she turned his face back towards her, holding his gaze. "Peter's fine, he's better. He didn't have what you had. There was something else going around that made a few people sick. Peter's fine, okay? You didn't make anyone else sick."

House pulled away, standing up straight as he shifted his cane to his other hand. "Yep. You won the lottery. Everyone else had to go home," he mocked, raising his eyebrows in amusement. "It's one of those drawings that pays periodically too, so I hope your penchant for obeying orders means good habits when it comes to taking pills twice a day for the next six months," he added. "You're fine. And before you say anything, I know it's all you've been doing for the last week, but you need actual sleep. Lara Croft here lasted seven days with you conked out, she can deal with another six hours ( ... )

Rob glanced at Fox and then watched House move to the door. "Thanks. For whatever it is you did. And the booze, well... you looked like you needed it more than I did. I hope your day got better," he murmured with a flicker of a smile. "Maybe just tell her outright you want her," he added but didn't elaborate. He figured House's problems had revolved around a romantic interest of some sort. He remembered sitting at the bar boozing himself in much the same position when Fox rejected him.
