Fic Recs Masterpost

May 17, 2011 20:09

So the way I do recs is basically "bookmark it on Delicious the second time around if I'm rereading it multiple times and don't forget to", so there's a lot of really good fics I like that I don't end up bookmarking/posting just because I'm easily distracted and stuff, so yeah.

Also I'll try to focus on fic that don't seem to be especially well-known, since it's way more useful to find a list with a higher proportion of fics visitors are less likely to have read yet.

Sherlock

Strange Aeons
Summary: “Have you ever heard of an Outer God?” John asked pleasantly.

Burning Moon
Summary: Jim used to study heaven, but he tired of staring at rotting stars. He likes his corpses fresh, and unrecognizable. He likes his weapons clean.
My pining kink, let me show you it. This and the fic I'm reccing just below it were both linked on the kinkmeme or something, and this one is asexual!Moriarty/Moran and it's just. I just fucking love pining and things that hurt in the way that only yearning can hurt.

And Fall Apart, and Start Again
A series of snapshots that come together to make Sebastian Moran the man he is. Jim Moriarty/Sebastian Moran
More pining. A lovely, poignant fic from Moran's POV. I'm not really sure how to summarize it, but I spent the last few minutes being annoyed that I hadn't saved it and then digging it out of my browser history, so that's gotta be worth something.

Brilliant and Commonplace
For the prompt: "If someone could write me anything involving transgenderism/gender ambiguity/etc., I'd ♥ them forever."
FtM!John/Sherlock.

Symmetrical, Unbroken
Sherlock is intersexed and identifies himself as a man. His ambiguous genitalia and the history of his sexuality and identity are what have kept him from being close to people romantically, particularly John. John finds out or is told, and it really is all fine.
This one was really great. I haven't reread it in a while, but I think I remember it feeling very peaceful, like it'd be really great lazy Sunday reading material.

Transport
Sensory deprivation, John works at the club Sherlock goes to for that sort of thing. Contains BDSM.

The Deepest Secret Nobody Knows
Sherlock | Sally/Sherlock past , John/Sherlock implied | PG-13 | 12,008 | The real reason Sally Donovan hates Sherlock so much? They have a child he never sees.
This is Sally!POV, and it's really, really great. Like, really, really great, and also hurty. Basically what it says on the tin, and then lots of kinda wistfulness, I guess? Or... I don't really know the word for it, maybe wistfulness. The author writes a lot of really good angst (and I think she's got a DW cossover kicking around or something, but I'm not really into DW fic yet so I haven't read).

Have you Heard about the Morstans?
Summary: After an attempt by Moriarty's men on her life, Molly is forced to assume the identity of Mary Morstan when she enters the witness protection program.
This and the sequel are really good, again in a "hurts so much", "hurts so inevitably" kind of way. Basically John and Molly go into witness protection after Reichenbach and sort of fall together and stuff while getting over Sherlock and then Sherlock comes back and John can't stay away from him even though he cares for Molly and she cares for him and it hurts so much. But in a good way.

Nothing but What God Gave You
Summary: Co-ed means compromise. Apparently.
Fem!Sherlock + John. I just really like pining, okay, and this delivers it in spades, with John's understated, open desire and Sherlock's complete inability to figure out what she wants to do about it, if anything at all.

Pilot Study
Summary: John is starting to realise something, and he thinks it might be about Sherlock. Sherlock conducts a pilot study and John is more than a little out of the loop.
Basically, Harry helps Sherlock get John, but structured in a very interesting sort of way. Very charming. Also, I like fics with Harry in.

A Case Of Identity
Summary: Sherlock's exhausted after a case; Lestrade looks after him.
Sherlock/Lestrade.

The Plan
Summary: John had a plan, and its name was Get Some Sex. And the capitals were most certainly necessary.
John/Sherlock

This Gold Thread
Summary: Space AU. She had studied the Legend of John more than any other. Now one of the protagonists of that story is standing in front of her in the flesh.
John/Sherlock. I don't know, this one really stuck with me, even if I can't exactly quantify what about it makes it special. I remember reading it the first time and thinking it was a neat take on the concept of legends and whatever, and then getting really sad later when I wanted to reread it and had trouble finding the link again.

The Art of Scheduling, or, How Mycroft Came to Realize He was Well and Truly Fucked
It suited him, and he assumed it suited her for she'd never given any indication otherwise.
I'm not generally into Mycroft/Anthea, but I liked this one a lot.

One Date, Three Meals, and the End of Things
Summary: It's two days later, when Sherlock is cleaning out the pockets of his coat and trousers, that he realizes he still has Jim Moriarty's phone number.
Moriarty/Sherlock.

An Experiment, of Sorts
Summary: Faced with a case where a rape victim murdered his attacker, Sherlock finds himself without the required knowledge to solve the crime. He performs an experiment on John, the most suitable subject - but the fall-out is far more shattering than he could have anticipated.
Sherlock rapes John as an experiment, for a case. (Obviously, noncon warnings apply.) So this is one of those fics that hurt too much for me to be able to read again because it was really, really heartbreaking, but so very good. Brilliant and realistic and unfortunately in this case realistic means "there are lines that can't be crossed and Sherlock's crossed them" and in this fic he deals with the consequences.

Feel free to add moar recs in the comments, or talk about the fics or whatever, guys.
