We've had a week in which we've seen/been to some cool things:
We saw
The Visitor on Thursday night. It was a well-done movie ultimately underlining some extreme flaws in the American Immigration/Deportation system. While overly obvious with some of its imagery and plot devices, the movie is still one of the better ones I've seen in an actual theater in a while (although we hadn't gone to a movie since Cloverfield, I think).
While we were waiting to get our car's oil changed on Saturday (which had some ridiculous waiting time of like 2 hours for some reason), we decided to go for a 2-mile (each way) hike along busy 7-lane roads to see Wall-E. While also not without its flaws (most namely the fairly inane love story), it was another solid Pixar release, well worth checking out if you have the time. There are some great details, which made the film for me. (the use of the 2001 theme, the "mice", Wall-E taking off his shoes for example)
Then there was the Spain/Germany match. The first half was great, the second disappointing. We went to the only bar in Tucson which was *really* playing the game, as far as we know. There were a few hardcore fans on both sides, mixed with us more casual observers. We had been watching the events at this place for a few games, and all of the other games had a lot more fan reaction than the final did. Plus, after the way Turkey had been coming back in the final seconds previously, the game was simply anticlimactic. It was a great time nonetheless.
We saw Fleet Foxes on Monday night, at a venue we'd never been to before (nor had most of the people there, apparently). They were fun to watch and listen to, although they were sick from smog in LA from the day before. They'll be at the Capital Hill Block Party, check them out if you're there.
Finally, we saw Persepolis last night, which was amazing. It instantly has gone onto my (relatively small) list of "good" movies. Unfortunately, both Anna and I got annoyed with some of the commentary of one of the people we were watching it with (who finished the movie with the statement "it was both funny and sad - that's hard to do."). I think another viewing is in order.
