shoes and consumables

I just occured to me how much milage I walk/run. I figure I cover an average of 5+ miles a day (walk to campus is 1.6, though I sometimes bike, walking around town, occasional jogs, going on longer 10+ mile walks on weekends occasionaly). Given that in a month I do about 30+5 = 150 miles a month. So in 3 months thats 450 miles. Most shoes go ( Read more... )

It took me a long time to come to that same conclusion about cameras. I used to panic about getting a camera dirty or damaged, but then I started to realize that digital camera bodies in particular are obsolete in a couple of years (they still work, but so much more is available at a lower cost, just like any other electronics) that it makes more sense to think of them as something to be used for their intended purpose and if damaged, replace them. This is what finally let me start carrying it with me into places I normally wouldn't have such as taking it camping, into hard hat areas, etc. What really pushed me over the edge was realizing that there's a lot of things to see in areas that aren't great for electronics, and I can either have a nice and clean camera that's completely obsolete and few pictures, or I can have a camera that shows quite a bit of use (and might even have been repaired or replaced after some of the use was too extreme) and a lot of pictures that make it all worth the expense. Up until now I also took the same consumables approach to shoes, partly because I pronate so aggressively that I actually shear chunks of the heels off of my shoes within 6-9 months of wear, and partly because I tend to stomp my feet into them rather than tying the laces when I'm in a hurry.

I hate to sound like an advertisement, but one of the nice things about my new Chacos is that they're resoleable for a third of the original cost. If you can find resoleable shoes of some variety, they might serve your needs better.
