A Milky Way and a Rose
She started walking. She didn't want to, necessarily, but the amount of looks she was getting from passers by would have made anyone run away. Funny, she would have thought were she in the right state of mind, you'd think New Yorkers would be used to seeing random women dressed in ball gowns sitting on benches alone crying.
She wasn't sure how far she had walked, or how long for, but it couldn't have been far, or long. She stopped in front of a gas station swarming with police officers, yellow tape encircling the scene. She didn't want to know what had happened there; had she been thinking straight she would have realized that she already knew.
She noticed a lone man sitting on the curb, head in his hands. Another soul in misery.
'What happened?' she asked as she came up to him.
The man lifted his head. 'Robbery,' was all he said at first, rubbing a hand over his face. He pointed to the door, 'a man helped, arrested one man, turns out there was another, shot him in the chest. He's dead.'
CJ was still in a daze. 'That's awful.' She sat down next to him on the curb.
The man nodded. 'A Milky Way,' he shook his head.
'What?' CJ asked, looking at him.
'A Milky Way chocolate bar,' he said, meeting her eyes. 'That was all he wanted. A Milky Way and a rose.'
CJ sniffled lightly. 'I wonder who the rose was for,' she murmured. 'I wonder if the person it was for will ever know that he'd bought it for them.'
'Yeah,' the man agreed, noticing for the first time the tear tracks on her cheeks.
A police officer approached a minute later, asking the man if he was ready to give a statement.
'Yes, of course,' he replied shakily. He stood, brushing down his trousers though there was nothing on them.
He turned back to CJ briefly. 'Are you okay?'
CJ looked up, touched that he had asked. 'No,' she answered, honestly. Then she indicated to the police officer, 'go on.'
He smiled at her slightly, nodded, and walked away.
CJ sighed and got to her feet. She'd have even more people staring at her and asking her questions if she stayed there. Taking a couple of steps, she was surprised to see Ron and a couple of other Secret Service agents standing near the entrance, talking to the lead investigator, she assumed. What was he doing there, she wondered. A nagging feeling was making itself known inside of her, and she suddenly felt a sense of dread. She took a couple of steps further so that she could see through the glass doors into the shop, and saw a man lying there, surrounded by flowers. Black suit, grey hair.
She gasped, and a choked sob welled up in her throat. She knew what had happened; was surprised that it had taken her so long to figure out.
A Milky Way and a rose. That's all he'd gone in there for.
Now she knew the person the rose was intended for, and it made the tears fall even faster.
