I write tonight from Ireland where the countryside sprawls out across the horizon and I realize how long its been since I've seen anything substantially green. Cork is a quaint little southern city where a river tumbles through two lovely streets lined with tiny shops. Everything here is simple and wonderful, as Europe always is, and I have also never tasted such unbelievable beer. Stout really does taste different here.
In any event, I've just arrived this afternoon and spent the evening walking along the river in the rain, let the entire semester just fall right into it, and caught my breathe again, outside the academy. This break has been short lived, however, as our conference starts tomorrow and the convener of my panel called tonight and asked me to extend my talk to 40 minutes. I admit to feeling slightly nervous about this but excited as well at the challenge, as I'm becoming much more comfortable and graceful with public speaking and I really enjoy the paper I'm presenting-- part of my thesis from last year.
Thinking of you on this rainy winter night. g.
