YOG and the shannanigans

Aug 18, 2010 01:08

Despite all the negative air and backlash the YOG is having internally with most Singaporeans, I for one, is silently supporting the YOG...purely for support of sports and its cause. A very simple thought but I think an appropriate one.

True that there was so much detest generated when the budget exceeded initial figures, and the food fiasco, and the obvious astro-turfing. I don't deny them, but I don't make them a point to BOYCOTT the games. Why are my fellow Singaporeans putting politics in front of sports? *coughtemasekreviewcoughcough*
Yes, these issues need redress, but that doesn't give them a reason to embarrass the other well-meaning, aspiring young atheletes who are really vying for the medal and use this platform as a springboard. I am starting to think some people are out just to quickly bury PAP with this event.

Sport events on a global scale are always open to potential politicizing: Berlin Olympics in 1936, the crisis of Munich 1972 Olympics, the Tibetan protests during Beijing Olympics relay.....not to mention also the huge amount of money spent by South Africa for the world cup. Such things are not uncommon, but really, marrs the good intent of the games.

And anyways, I was telling a colleague of mine on my quiet support for the YOG.
I like to see my favorite sports held at a standard international level which I never had good chance to watch before! It also satisfy that lingering want of learning those sport but alas, am too old for that really.
Furthermore, almost ALL the athletes of our Singapore contingent are TRUE SINGAPOREANS! NO FOREIGN-BOUGHT talents! We have to support our fledging youths, or else in time more foreign talent will come in.
