Naming Conventions

This deserves it's own post.

A friend found out she was pregnant recently. Today, we were discussing babies and stuff and the subject of baby names came up.

With Eden and I, she get's first dibs on a male name and I get first dibs on a female name. If we have a girl, I've decided I would name her Seraphina Nicole. If we have a boy, she wants to name him Christopher (Kit for short). It got me thinking about some other names today. If we ended up with a second boy instead of a girl, I'd choose between three names, Dean, Kyle and Riley. Dean is my dad's middle name and it's the only family name I really like. My dad and I are closer now too, so that would be nice. I already posted about Kyle back in November. I figured I'd post about where the name Riley came from.

Back in my senior year in high school, we went on a retreat for a week. During the retreat, we were split up into teams or groups. The student leader of my group was Casey Haeling. I had never met Casey before that week. It was a small school, so I had seen him around, but I never 'met' him. During the course of the week though we became pretty close. Anyway, this isn't really about him. It's about his brother, Riley.

Riley was staying at a friends house. His friend had been attacked earlier in the day so he was hanging out at the house, keeping his friend's sister, Jennifer, company.  The family had been growing marijuana at the house which had been believed to be the cause of the attack earlier in the day. The marijuana was moved off the property but the word still spread. As Riley was sitting on the couch watching tv with Jennifer, some men with guns kicked in the door and busted into the house, looking for the pot. What happened next still isn't clear. Another friend in the house went for a gun, and that's when the shots started. Riley dove onto Jennifer and was shot five times. Jennifer was shot as well but she survived due to his actions. Riley, however, did not.  Again, just like in Kyle's case, the authorities had the wrong suspect. In this case, the wrong man was actually incarcerated for some time before everything was unraveled.

I've always liked the name Riley. People always ask each other where their parents got their name from. In this case I think our son would be proud to tell the story.
