Just heard on the "Quest for Atlantis" they're playing on the Weather Channel in the place of factual television- a woman says "What better place to store your important documents than the bottom of a pyramid?" And at this point I can't tell if she's being serious or not. I have a terrible feeling she's being serious. (Edit later: she is)
The Atlantis thing bugs me because it's a perfectly reasonable proposal- an early bronze-age civilization (ie citystate) that is destroyed in some kind of aquatic disaster. It's not like they don't happen. But practically no one manages to be reasonable about it- stick to the Mediterranean-Aegean-Sinai area, stick to the right time frame (5,000-2,000 B.C.) and DON'T MENTION ALIENS. For example- there's a guy who thinks he's found evidence of a citystate underwater off the coast of Cyprus. He's looking for evidence of major public works, like aquaducts, that might have been around at that time. See? Reasonable.
Someone else however, is busy finding "Ancient Mediterranean-style" anchors in the Caribbean. Because obviously, only Europeans made anchors out of rocks with holes in them.
Just in case anyone is wondering- I'm leaning toward the Minoans being Atlantis. They were on an island and recent discoveries imply their society was seriously damaged- probably to extinction- by a tsunami. Sounds like the basis of a legend to me.
