I'm finding that I can be honest and vulnerable, and people will be supportive. I don't always have to stay silent, deflect with a sarcastic comment, make a joke, or be so overwhelmingly inappropriate that I'm not taken seriously.
Last night, I went to dinner with a few friends*. All I ordered was a glass of water. When asked why I wasn't eating, I decided to be honest and said, "I ate earlier today. But to be honest, I had a pretty bad panic attack his morning. So I don't really wanna eat. Life's been kinda tough lately." I didn't go into specifics, but the table was overwhelmingly supportive. Someone cracked jokes to break the mood, one person stayed silent, but everyone was compassionate.
Soon thereafter, the conversation moved on to such topics as ethnicity vs. race, Holocaust denial in Germany (the German guy had some insight on this), and whether a tent should qualify as a house for 4th Amendment purposes (the med students made some great arguments). I love intellectual conversation combined with "I can hardly believe you said that" humor.
So thanks to everyone who let me peek out of my shell. The world isn't always so scary.
*It was funny when we noticed that everyone at the table was a lawyer/law student or doctor/med student.
