I kicked back in my chair, looking at a memo that I hadn’t asked for. The date on the memo led me to believe that it was either faulty information, or that someone actually thought, in our surveillance department, that Lilah or I wouldn’t care about the information.
I looked at the document again, and couldn’t believe it. The vampire slayer, Buffy Summers, had died, due to mystical forces and this was two months ago, and it was just coming to my desk, now? Heads were going to roll over this one, and literally. This pertained directly to Angel and we didn’t know about it sooner? We did have the Hyperion hotel bugged, at the behest of an up and comer, who Lilah hated, so I sort of instantly liked, named Gavin Park, but Angel had become wise to it and had taken the surveillance cameras down, and had taken our sound away from us. That had been a pity, because while we could usually stay ahead of Angel and team with a little bit or reconnaissance, rendered with one phone call from either Lilah or myself, it had been nice to stay ahead of the game for that short while and even with that, we didn’t know that Buffy Summers had died.
Two years ago, I wouldn’t have been able to tell anyone who she was. Vampire slayers were seldom mentioned around here, and never around me, until we had hired Faith to take care of Angel for us. Well, that didn’t go so well, but we had also learned of Buffy Summers’ existence and knew almost everything about her, including that she had once been a lover of Angel’s and according to all that we knew, which was pretty much everything about Angel and Buffy Summers, when they got pelvic, Angel lost his soul.
Before my leaving, and my journey home and then to Tibet, where the Senior Partners had caught up to me, there had always been this plan in my mind to somehow make Buffy bed Angel again, to turn him dark, like the Senior Partners wanted, but the problem there, was, it was virtually impossible to control a vampire slayer, making the execution of that plan near impossible, and as an added feature in my phase where I was starting to become disenchanted with Wolfram and Hart, I didn’t care if Angel was dark. I preferred him dead. I still did, even after the Senior Partners made me an offer that I couldn’t refuse, complete with power at the office and physically as well.
Still, I dialed Lilah’s office and on speaker phone, connected with her. This was going to be an interesting conversation and Angel’s movements were suddenly important. The slayer that he loved in the past and knowing Angel, probably still loved, was dead. This could be used to our advantage. After four rings, Lilah finally picked up.
“Lilah, you might want to report to my office. I don’t know if you got the same document that I did this morning, but if you didn’t, believe me, you’ll want to hear about it.”
