If politics and religion are not considered polite conversation in civilized society, then how can we suppose to use them to gauge the civility of man?

because "civilized society" is afraid of itself, deathly afraid of itself.

I too am thinking it is related to fear, but more like a fear of offending someone. We have become so obsessed with being politically correct that we are no longer able to say what needs to be said, purely because it could offend someone. What we must realize is that something somewhere will always offend someone, and the truth, sadly enough, is quite offensive to those who benefit from lies. And because pain is to be avoided, they use very disturbing logic on us to make us believe that the injection is better for us than the amputation and cauterization of the infected limb, purely because, well, there is more money in a treatment than a cure. To this end, those who would not benefit from the truth make the truth seem unpleasant and something to be avoided, as opposed to merely unpleasant at times, so they can continue to reap the rewards of a submissive populace. Why on earth would we choose the obvious lie over the painful truth? Wizard's Furst Rule, ladies and gentlemen. According to the book Wizard's First Rule written by Terry ( ... )

in short, because people don't like to disagree. it would not be a problem if everyone were tolerant of others' beliefs, especially when you are in your 20s and have beliefs like i do ~_^

Pack? It looks to be more of a herd mentality at times to me. A pack at least will work in concert towards a common goal other than, in the case of a herd, mad flight from a supposed threat towards supposed safety. In a pack, there is a healthy challenging of leadership and norms, where in a herd it is usally follow the leader until he becomes obviously too old and dumb to lead effectively. Anyone else care to say more? This is quite fun.
