In the book Blink by Malcolm Gladwell, there is a section on Facial Action Coding System or FACS. According to that, you can create emotion by making the appropriate facial movements. For example, my sister and I can perform the Duchenne Smile pretty much on command, which is a smile in which the eyes crinkle (a "true smile"}, and it does make you happy on command.
However, I can't stay angry for very long. It's fleeting. like a matchstick burning. But last night, I was furious, and I felt my face, remembered the positioning. Voila, anger maintained! Not only was I angry, I was thrilled. This anger was quick-witted, passionate and alert, and aided me while defending myself.
Unfortunately, I am too nice. I've made sure to file the "position" away, for those times when I need to defend myself.
I hope all of you had a Happy fourth of July!
