Yesterday morning afternoon I had a voicemail waiting from my dad. What was unusual-and anyone who actually knows my dad can attest to this-was that the message was joyous. Warmth was radiating from the message, as he laughed and asked me to call him back in many different silly voices.
Dad's finally settled on a job! Last summer, while I was in Jacksonville, he decided to take the summer off and look for a new position. Being a medical coder, he's had many offers, but was enjoying himself too much to accept. His new position will take him out of town for three weeks at a time, to different places around the country.
"But Dad, isn't that so long?" I protested. As I say this, I finally take note of his laughing. "You're happy! You can't wait to get away!" Dad just laughs with increased intensity.
Is it wrong of me to react with admiration?
