Over the next few moments she began to, without her awareness and therefore completely honestly, instilling within him the hope that perhaps our earth was not the godless desert it had made itself out to be. The beauty of her nature spoke to him of the happiness of god, and the comfort of her presence stilled the delirium of his metaphysical solitude. The sadness which had commanded his life through the memory of a sorrowful past now fell into ruin and obscurity and, like the gods of ancient Egypt, now seemed but an antiquated superstition.
“These things are great,” she said.
“Have you ever had one?”
“No, but they’re fucking good.”
She once more put a cigarette to her lips and defiled her lungs with grace.
