My pick of the currently available tablets is probably the ASUS Transformer (the 32Gb with the docking keyboard) ... in terms of bangs per buck and just general niceness. (Costco had it very cheaply last month... shop around a bit)
I'm also quite pleased with my Acer Iconia A500.
I have yet to root any of my Android devices... I've not so far felt the need.
I unfortunately (or possibly fortunately) had the need. There's a known problem with the Nexus One power button going quite flakey. I'd already taken it apart once to fix a broken screen and I was damned if I was going to go through that again to fix a button. So I looked around for ways to wake the phone with a different button - the only solution was to root the phone. The Cyanogen mod natively supports wakeup with volume control or the trackball button.
I have found I really like how customisable the interface is now though- background and icons rotate with gravity, I've now got 5 buttons on the dockbar, have a sleep on the notification pulldown and have removed text labels on the icons.
I've not yet thought of a justification for a tablet, which is the only reason I've not got one. The nearest I can get is "interactive map/board for gaming" as that can't be done by my current devices.
As a matter of interest, do you have a preferred tablet? And is it running the standard OS or have you rooted it?
