[Daily Mel] Beauty in black and white

Oct 24, 2011 22:11

I hardly ever do black and white images. And usually not of flowers. But when I saw this image of a Chrysanthemum, that I took this past weekend, I thought it was gonna look best in black and white. Originally the Chrysanthemum was orange-red with yellow tips at the end of the
petals. I did not care too much for the original color combination, but loved the shapes, so I decided to go for black and white.
To achieve this black and white toning I created two layers from the original background layer. I desaturated one, and converted the other one to greyscale using the channel mixer and an orange filter. That latter layer came out really strong black and white - a bit too much. So I
lower the opacity and had it blend in with the layer below that was just saturated until I liked the effect. Removed some spots, sharpened the
image and this is the finished product. What do you think?
