Unbirthday - KH2 (Vexen/Demyx)

“You know, if you stare at that tea any longer, you’re going to freeze it.”

“Nine, my patience with this wore out about ten minutes ago. Our mission is to see the Queen, and it is quickly becoming obvious to me that these idiots have no idea what we’re talking about. We need to go. Now.”

“Vexen, this is the longest time I’ve had with you in ages. Take a break for once,” Demyx pled, hoping his lover would hold back from throwing tea cups for just a few more minutes.

“I’m just tired of wasting time,” Vexen sighed, eyeing the figures at the end of the table with distaste. His companion only grinned, tipping his tea cup to him in salute. “It’s only a waste of time when you treat it that way, Vexen,” Demyx replied cheerfully. The other Nobody just snorted and shook his head. “At least you seem to be in good spirits,” he muttered under his breath.

“So!” one of the natives exclaimed, a particularly annoying one called the March Hare, as he popped up in the space between the two Nobodys unexpectedly. “It is a very small world indeed! Who would have thought that both of you would have the same Unbirthday as us!”

“Who would have thought?” The other native, The Mad Hatter, repeated dutifully. Vexen glared pointedly at Demyx. The Nocturne just shrugged and smiled, offering no relief.

“Lucky us!” he said agreeably, poking his companion in warning for his expression. The green eyed scientist continued to glare at him, even as he pulled out a trim notepad to record his observations of the odd ritual in. He wasn’t about to let data go to waste, even if the situation was absolutely ridiculous.

Seeing the notepad, Demyx’s expression faltered slightly. “Actually Vexen, I really did want to talk to you. It’s as good time as any while we wait for them to finish,” he murmured, suddenly taking a great interest in his tea cup. The Hare and the mad man had begun to sing again, effectively masking their discussion.

Vexen looked up from his notepad, finding the change in his partner’s tone rather unexpected. “Demyx?” he questioned, his tone much softer than it had been before. The younger man beside him seemed uncharacteristically shy, fidgeting slightly in his seat as Vexen watched him. The scientist was growing concerned, and reached out to take his lover’s shoulder but was cut off abruptly by the intrusion of the mad man in the hat.

“Clean cup, clean cup! Move down!” the man cried, grabbing a surprised Demyx by the arm and yanking him to another seat further down the table. To Vexen’s frustration, the two natives promptly began to sing again.

“I actually wanted to know if you ever figured out what kind of chemicals got dumped on me?” Demyx called, trying to be heard over the song. He had been dragged to the other side of the table. He was across from the Academic, thankfully, but the song just seemed to be building louder and louder. Besides…this wasn’t exactly something he was willing to shout.

It didn’t work out very well. “What?” Vexen cried in response, leaning as far across the table as he dared with all the seemingly delicate tea sets around.

“Did you find out what I got doused with before I got pregnant?” Demyx tried again.
“What? I guess I did. I think I wrote it down after it happened, just in case it really made you sick or something. Why?” The older Nobody replied. A hissing sound suddenly distracted both of them. It seemed the Hare had pulled out a cake and lit it, all while still singing of course. Vexen was really quite tired of this world..Queen or no Queen.

“Well…I’d like to-“ Demyx started to continue before he got shoved by the Hare, who gleefully dropped the cake with the hissing candle on the table. Vexen was on the verge of incoherent rage.

“What?!”

“I’ve been thinking, and I really want to…” The singing rose to a climax and overpowered the rest of Demyx’s sentence. That’s it, Vexen decided; it would be best for everyone if he just cast Blizzaga over this whole place and never spoke of it again. “Repeat yourself, Nine!” he barked, the ice practically forming in his hand already.

“I SAID I WANT TO HAVE ANOTHER BABY!” Demyx scremed. The clearing went silent, save for the hissing of the cake. Vexen just blinked, while Demyx stared at him with a firm and unwavering determination. “I want to carry your child again, Four. I love you, and I thought it was the best experience in the world. It…it would be great…I mean, before you go to Oblivion with Marluxia. Please,” The Nocturne said, his voice softer and more pleading.

It took a few seconds for it all to sink in, seconds that let the hissing candle whittle down to almost nothing. “You…you what?” Vexen repeated, his voice weak from shock. Then, of course, as was normal for the world they were in, the cake exploded. The Mad Hatter and the March Hare were the only ones to avoid it, joining together into a refrain of “-A very merry Unbirthday….to you!”

The next thing Vexen heard was his lover’s laughter as a sly tongue licked frosting off his nose. “I really do want this. I mean it,” Demyx said, tracing his now frosting free tongue across his lips. Vexen just blinked at him in shock. His lover laughed again. “A very merry Unbirthday to you,” Demyx purred, moving in to press a wet frosting flavored kiss against the scientist’s lips.

Sunrise - ATLA (Zukaang)

Aang could barely crawl off Appa’s back as the Sky Bison settled into the Fire Nation palace courtyard. It had been a good day of flying, and the Avatar wanted to do was eat, take a much needed bath, and sit and absorb his boyfriend’s heat for a while. In fact, just seeing the Fire Lord would be wonderful. Unfortunately, unlike the past few times he had returned to the Fire Nation…there was no Zuko to be found.

Usually he was waiting in the courtyard, gold eyes bright and eager to meet Aang’s as he pulled him into the palace. This time, there was nothing but a cursory guard to lead Appa to the stable. It was making the airbender a bit nervous. “Hey, um, do you know where the Fire Lord is? Usually he comes to meet me…” Aang questioned the guard, who just shrugged in response. It left Aang feeling doubly concerned, a feeling which remained with him all through out dinner and his placement in a plush guest room. Still no Zuko, no Iroh, no Ursa, no Mai, no Oyumi, not even a token appearance of any of Zuko’s ministers either. Aang’s heart felt like it was beating twice as fast as usual. This just wasn’t normal. The guard at his door kept him from leaving, but he doubted he was going to get much sleep that night either. It was almost like he had been captured, a feeling that Aang really didn’t want to relive.

It was about midnight when the Avatar’s last candle burnt out, leaving him alone and cold in a dark empty room. “This was not the way this visit was supposed to go,” he muttured to himself, pulling his blanket around his ears and trying to force himself to sleep. At the balcony, he heard a soft laugh, making him jolt up from his bed. “Who’s there?” he asked, grabbing his staff from where it was leaning against the bedframe. “It’s really stupid to attack the Avatar, you know. Just come out now, and I won’t hurt you,” Aang warned.

The stranger laughed again. “You’re really twitchy tonight, aren’t you? Any other time I probably would have caught you fast asleep.” Aang frowned and stuck the end of the staff towards the stranger. The other person just shook his head. “Come on, you’re still scared? Well…we have a long way to go, and not a lot of time to spend getting there. You better come with me,” he said.

Something in the stranger’s voice was familiar, but the sound was too muffled to tell. Aang figured that he must be wearing something over his face, but it was too dark to tell for sure. He stepped forward tentatively. The stranger climbed onto the balcony and jumped to the next rooftop. “Come on,” he urged, “we’re going to the docks. I’m not going to drag you.” Aang frowned and moved to firebend, hoping the light would reveal the stranger, but he moved on to the next rooftop too quickly to catch. The Avatar was left to follow.

////
The war balloon was small and non-descript, easily hidden among the ramshackle buildings on the docks. Aang was left alone with the stranger in the basket as it rose into the air, and was rather unimpressed. “We could have just taken Appa,” he said, watching the hooded man feed the burner. “Where are you taking me, anyway?”

”Out of the Fire Nation. You’ll see when we get there,” the other man replied gruffly, keeping his eyes fixed on the horizon.

Aang frowned. “That’s not good enough. Tell me where we’re going, or I’m leaving.” The dark-hooded man laughed and came close, grabbing the Avatar’s arm. “What if I don’t feel like sharing?” he murmured, the painted mask on his face easily visible.

Aang just stood there and blinked for a few minutes, before reaching for the other man’s mask. “Zuko, I just really want to kiss you. Can we cut the games now?” he asked, moving his arm closer to his chest to kiss the other man’s hand.

“Aang! You’re ruining it!” The young Fire Lord snapped, pulling off the blue oni mask and glaring at his lover. “Come on.”

“I wouldn’t be ruining it if you weren’t being so ridiculous. I just want to know where we’re going, that’s all. And to, you know, enjoy my time with you,” Aang replied, blushing slightly.
Zuko sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. “Look, we can’t right now. You’ll regret it later, I promise. Just...wait and see the surprise, okay?” He moved in to peck the Avatar lightly on the forehead before sitting in his corner of the basket. Aang was left pouting in disappointment.

////
The glow of the sunrise was just visible in the sky, portending the glorious color to come. Aang was dozing, able to sleep knowing that his boyfriend was there, even if he wasn’t kissing him senseless like he wanted him to. The scarred man was ever watchful, pacing the length of the basket several times before something in front of the balloon caught his eye.

“Hey. Hey, Aang,” he growled, shaking the Avatar’s shoulder lightly. The airbender clung to sleep desperately, only groaning and pressing his head to Zuko’s hand in response to the shaking. The firebender groaned and wrapped a strip of red cloth around Aang’s eyes. “If you don’t wake up, you can’t complain to me that this is too tight,” Zuko said dryly. Aang just scooted closer to the firebender. “We there yet?” he asked sleepily. Zuko just sighed and pressed his head against the Avatar. “Yeah. You’ll see,” he murmured.

The time was too short, Aang decided, before the balloon skidded to a gentle landing on some sort of a hard platform. Still, he was ready to get the blindfold off. Zuko’s warm hand took his arm and led him off the balloon, taking him up a path that seemed vaguely familiar.
“It’s taken us a whole year, but we finally finished,” Zuko said softly, pressing his hands against Aang’s shoulders. “And it’s taken a lot of money, and a lot of work. But we’ve found out so much more than we knew before…including some stuff about you. Happy Birthday, Aang.”

The blindfold was lifted, revealing the early morning sun refracting across the newly cleaned stone of a restored Western Air Temple. The moss had been cleared from the fountain, the statues had been cleaned and restored, and all the battle damage from the war was gone. Aang was close to tears.

“Zuko…but…how did you, I mean, where did you get the time to work on this? Why? I can’t believe you would-“ he said, his voice wavering with emotion. The firebender just smiled slightly and pressed against his lover. “I told you I wanted to fix the mistakes we made during the war. I hope you can help us with the other ones too,” Zuko replied.

This time, the tears did come. “How did you know it was my birthday then? I barely even remember,” Aang asked, wrapping his hand around the Fire Lord’s.

“The monks here kept records on some of the wall paintings in the center of the temple. Your birth, it seems, was awfully important to them,” Zuko replied lightly. “I wonder what that was about.” Aang shook his head and elbowed his lover in the chest.

“Very funny, Zuko. Can I kiss you now?”

“If you wish,” Zuko replied before the airbender happily pounced on him, leaving them to embrace in front of the background of the rising sun.
