Abby had thought she left her fear of the dark behind when she left behind her childhood -- such as it was. Then the time in the Cretaceous happened and it brought it all back again. The darkness brought new terrors there and this time, the monsters were real. When it got dark, she would do her best to sleep, but the fear wouldn’t go away. There was always the chance an attack would come and they would be prey. She would finally sleep because she had to, even then, she was waiting for the dawn to break the darkness.

Connor feared the darkness. It hadn’t bothered him so much back home, where most things made some kind of sense. Stuck here, though, the complete blackness was more suffocating than home. There were no city lights to break it up, nor brightly lit streets to give the illusion of safety.
It wasn’t just the predators that made him afraid of the dark.
What really scared him was when he knew that Abby was so scared she couldn’t sleep. When she was so scared of the night that he could feel her crying silently, and he couldn’t protect her from that.

Soldiers weren’t supposed to be afraid of anything. It was a belief he had always lived by and it had gotten him through several rough situations. Showing no fear, convincing his men there was nothing to fear, that’s how he survived and got through from day to day.
Nights were different. Night was when he remembered how badly he had failed the two people who meant the most to him. Night was when he had to face that one more day had passed and he hadn’t found them and brought them home.
Nights scared him like nothing else ever had.
