drabble365days He listened quietly as Jenny gave an official debrief to Abby’s brother about what happened to Abby. He could tell that the brother wasn’t believing a word of it. How could he? He had seen what existed through one of those shards of light tunnels. He was pretty sure that they lost his sister through one of them.
“Everybody lies, Ms. Lewis. Everybody and especially those that work for the government. I may be shite for a brother and I may have caused Abby all kinds of pain and issues, but I know that rare opportunity or not, she never would have left without at least telling me. She’s a better sister than a bloke like me deserves, but she would tell me no matter what.” He gave them a smug look. “I know what’s really happened.”
“And what do you think happened to Abby, Jack?” Surprisingly enough, Jenny’s voice was calm and even.
“You’ve gone and lost her. She went through one of those strange tunnels of yours and she either got lost or she got eaten by one of those creatures that live on the other side.” Jack looked at Becker. “You know that, too, Captain Becker. You were there with Abby that day. The tunnel closed and we were almost trapped and then came close to being eaten before the bloody thing opened up again.”
Becker kept his mouth shut, his jaw clenched. It wouldn’t do any good to remind Jack of why they had almost been killed in that incursion. Because Jack decided to drive into it because it looked cool - and then later he didn’t give a damn that Abby could have been killed when she went to find him.
“Abby wasn’t eaten by anything, Jack,” Jenny said in a professional tone and Becker hoped to hell that she was right. “She even left you a set of keys to her flat in case you needed a place to crash like you needed before.”
Jack narrowed his eyes. “Abby kicked me out of the flat, telling me I needed to grow up and learn some responsibility before she could trust me again. Where is she?”
“Let me put it this way, Mr. Jack Maitland,” Jenny said, her voice cooling immensely. “Either your sister got suddenly called away to help a zoo with the care of an exotic creature, or you can spend some time in a cell at the ARC because you’re known to have a big mouth and a penchant for taking things that do not belong to you.”
“You wouldn’t dare.”
“Wouldn’t I?” She turned to Becker. “Captain, I believe that I am well within the law to bring him in for posing a threat to our operatives and being known to steal items from our research programs.”
“I didn’t steal anything of yours.”
“You lost Rex in a poker game. Rex was not yours to give away. He belonged to us.”
“He belonged to Abby!”
“Who in turns works for the Minister.”
Jack glared at her. “Fine. My sister is off on some research project and no one knows when she’ll come back since it was a crisis she was called to. I shouldn’t expect to hear from her any time soon.”
“I knew that you would be reasonable.”
“If anything happens to my sister because of you people, I’ll make you reagret every bit of it.”
“Because you’re such an upstanding brother that gives a damn what happens to her of if she’s happy,” Becker muttered.
After they were assured of Jack’s silence, Becker and Jenny headed back to the truck.
“I do not like that brat,” Jenny muttered when they were driving away.
“No one does, but I don’t think he’ll make a fuss about Abby being gone. After all, you just gave him her flat freely to use as he pleases.”
“I don’t want to see what that place looks like after a week of him living there and taking care of it. It will be a disaster area.”
