Character: Mayu Amakura
Series: Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly
Version: Video game version. Mayu is taken from the Lingering Scent (bad) ending, where Mio leaves the village alone and abandons her.
Age: 15
Gender: Female
Appearance: Mayu is a young Japanese girl with straight, medium-short black hair, brown eyes, and pale skin. She barely stands above five feet tall and has a thin frame; one could even guess she's a bit underweight. Mayu's right knee is usually kept bandaged, and she walks with a constant limp that becomes more noticeable the faster she forces herself to move. She wears simple black shoes, brown shin-high socks, a lace-trimmed, black short-sleeved shirt, and a short brown and white dress, which also has a red ribbon on the front that resembles a butterfly in its shape. An image of her outfit can be seen
here.
Personality: Mayu is a reserved, shy, and thoughtful young girl, noticeably more introverted when compared to her younger twin sister. When they're together, Mayu has an easier time expressing herself and coming out of her shell, though the difference isn't all that major. She doesn't like to draw negative attention to herself, so she is very soft-spoken and tends to keep most thoughts to herself rather than voicing them aloud. Intuitive, she catches sight of things that sometimes go unnoticed by others; sometimes she brushes it off or pretends she never saw anything (“Mio... Um, nevermind...”).
Mayu is very attached to her younger twin sister, Mio, even more so after her crippling childhood accident. Physically weak, she depends on Mio a lot throughout Fatal Frame II, often falling far behind while running away from ghosts (and getting frequently attacked by them in the process). Mayu’s biggest fear is being separated from Mio, resulting in their shared promise of being “together forever”.
To put it one way, Mayu's love and loyalty are... complex. From simple things like slowing down while walking, to the grave Crimson Sacrifice Ritual, Mayu used Mio's guilt over her childhood accident to make her sister do whatever she wanted. Though loving, she was still selfish when it came to her sister's time and attention. Mayu was surreptitiously manipulative, doing anything necessary to keep Mio's attention all to herself. A part of Mayu was secretly overjoyed whenever she felt her leg aching, because it meant Mio would stay close and pay her extra care.
Fears: Mayu's greatest fear is of being alone (and more specifically, being separated from her twin sister, Mio). The mere thought of being left behind always causes the girl much distress and desperation to prevent it. Growing up with a sixth sense, she has always been anxious around anything supernatural. After her experiences in All God's Village, that anxiety has morphed into severe distress and horror. Death is another fear -- when she will die, how she will die. Will she die before or after Mio? If truly forced to perform the Crimson Sacrifice Ritual, would Mio be the one to kill her? Or would Sae, the ghost possessing her, somehow beat her sister to it?
Weaknesses: Mayu's body is frail; she has little strength and can't be as physically active as most girls her age. Forcing herself to do so much as walk at a quicker pace can cause unnecessary strain on her bad leg. Her shortcomings force her to heavily depend on others willing to assist her, her sister Mio being the one most prevalent. Mayu is also unable to defend herself when it comes to supernatural forces. The presence of malevolent spirits is almost crippling, causing Mayu to freeze up in fear, often leaving her open for an attack (or turning herself into an unwanted obstacle Mio has to move around). Ghosts (like Sae) can also use her body as a medium against her will, as she isn't strong enough to deny them access.
Strengths/Abilities: Like her twin, Mayu has a sixth sense that makes her aware of the spiritual world. She can see and hear ghosts, and also receives vague visions when she touches certain items or enters certain rooms. Visions appear black and white, often accompanied by static-like sounds. Mayu’s sixth sense is a double-edged sword; while more powerful than Mio’s, it also makes her more vulnerable to spirits - an easy target.
History: (More information can be found
here if necessary. The following is a super condensed synopsis.)
One day in her early childhood, Mayu was playing with her younger twin, Mio, along a steep mountain path. Mio, running ahead, teased Mayu for being slow and joked about leaving her behind if she didn't hurry up. Not wanting to be left behind, Mayu still gave chase, eventually slipping and falling off the path. The accident crippled Mayu for life, leaving her with a bad right leg. (Playing through a certain part of Fatal Frame II reveals that Mayu fell on purpose.)
A short time after the accident, Mio, Mayu, and their mother, Shizu, moved away from their original home. Perhaps the reason for the move was their father "passing away". In truth, he went missing in the forest and was spirited away to a haunted place called the "Lost Village", but Shizu never told her daughters of this.
Years later, when the twins were fifteen, Shizu became very ill and had to be hospitalized. Mio and Mayu were sent to live with their uncle, Kei Amakura, until their mother's health improved. Within the same year Mio and Mayu heard a dam and man made lake would be built over their old childhood play area. After asking Kei for permission to go during summer vacation, he drove the twins back to their hometown for one last visit. While there, separated from Kei and sharing a relaxing moment by a stream, a strange, crimson-colored butterfly in the distance caught Mayu's attention. For some reason she gave chase, leading her (and in turn, her sister) through the forest to the Lost Village.
In the village Mayu encountered many horrors as she and her sister searched for a way out, their original path obscured and lost forever. Early on Mayu became possessed by the ghost of Sae Kurosawa, a former twin whose sacrificial ritual failed and whose sister, Yae, had apparently abandoned her. Sae's ghost took control of Mayu's body numerous times throughout the game, separating the two as they tried to escape. As Sae's influence over Mayu increased, she became more hostile towards Mio, chasing her down, asking "Yae" why she left or for her to complete the ritual by killing Sae (which would kill Mayu in the process).
Towards the end of the game (about one week after chasing that first buterfly), just when the Amakura twins are so close to reaching an escape route, Mayu is kidnapped by villager ghosts and taken back to Kurosawa House in order to perform the destined Crimson Sacrifice Ritual, which would calm the Hellish Abyss (a gateway to Hell) beneath the village and lift the dark curse currently oppressing it. Following the Lingering Scent ending of the game, after Mayu was taken away, Mio never went back to try and save her. Instead, she took the underground escape route and left All God's Village alone. Sae called out to Mio one last time -- even resorted to using Mayu's voice &mash; in an attempt to prevent her from running away. The ghost gave chase, but Mio somehow made it out alive, though still alone, and regained consciousness in the forest the next day. Mayu remained in the village, swearing she would wait forever, unaware (or perhaps in denial) that her sister would never come back.
