Ever since she had been a little girl, Esme wanted to be a mother. When she was mortal she had met a beautiful young doctor when she was sixteen. When he moved away she found that she still thought of him, and hoped one day she would see him again. At the age of twenty-five her parents pressured her to settle down and marry. Her husband was an abusive man. Instead of urging their daughter to leave them, they simply taught Esme how to cover up the signs of abuse. It was a relief when he was drafted into the war. It was not long after he came back that Esme discovered she was pregnant. Finally she would have her dream fulfilled, yet at what cost? It was one thing to endure her husband's abuse to her, but she would not allow him to hurt their child. Desperation to protect their son drove her to run away. She went north, became a teacher, and gave birth to her son. When he died a few years later, she felt as if she had nothing left to live for, and decided she was ready to die. Her suicide attempt by jumping off a cliff did not work out as she had planned. She had survived the fall; barely. However the doctor that treated her was none other than that handsome young doctor who treated her when she was sixteen. Esme was dying of her injuries from the fall so he took pity and turned her.
It was then that she found the life she had been so desperately searching for as a mortal. She married Dr. Carlisle Cullen, and took in his first born, Edward, as her own. It didn't matter that Edward had been turned before her, he was her son. Just as all of the Cullens became her children. No, they could never fill the void that losing her baby left, but they were her children. She found her niche in life...in death. It's funny how that worked out isn't it?
