Brngggg! Xiumin hopped into school like taking the final step in a laser beam trap. As usual, he made it just in the nick of time. Cutting it real close. He couldn’t afford another detention class on his record but he couldn’t help it either. He always woke up early and he didn’t take long to get ready. But it was his idiotic brother who always held him back.
Falling asleep over and over again, taking a 30-minute long shower and lazing his way over to the subway station, Jongdae wasn’t quite the morning person.
He speed-walked just fast enough so he reached his seat before Mr. Lee entered the class but not too fast as to break the school rules. He didn’t understand why people broke rules. Rules are meant to be followed. If we were supposed to break them, they wouldn’t need to exist in the first place. He always thought like this and so naturally, he was elected Assistant Class Monitor.
Of course, he couldn’t surpass the great teacher’s pet - Kim Junmyeon. Always seated in the front row, head perched on his prince-like hands, eager to learn and eager to please, goody-two-shoes Junmyeon was always favoured by teachers. Top buttoned always fastened, tie pulled up straight and hair never too long or too crazy. Assignments always handed in on time, A+ grades, attentive in class and helpful out of it, he was the ideal student.
Xiumin took his seat at the side of the class and took out his homework. Around him, the sound of laughter, shouts and claps - probably from the Reaction King, Chanyeol and his partner-in-crime, Baekhyun. Tao was towering over Junmyeon, his arms clasped tightly on Junmyeon’s shoulders. The height difference was daunting but their faces laughing.
Suddenly, the sound of the classroom doors bursting open brought silence over the class. All eyes turned towards the doors. At the first sight of the long wooden ruler and the grey suit, they rushed back to their places.
“Class stand. Good morning Mr. Lee”, said the class monitor and the rest of the class followed along with 90-degree bows and some a little more acute, a little unsynchronised but still bearable to the ears and the eyes.
The lesson went on, boring as usual. Economics. Banks, money, demand, supply, cost, profit.
As much of a good student he was, even Xiumin couldn’t take it anymore. His pen was uncontrollable, leading to a messy scribble over his notebook. His head drooping, right about to hit the table, when suddenly, it happened.
He happened.
A knock at the door.
A blonde boy.
Thin, tall, and very, very cute.
He enters shyly. Mr. Lee introduces him as the new student joining this semester. The boy then takes the introduction into his own hands.
“Hi. I’m Lu Han. I transferred here from China because my dad got a new job here. Um, sorry I was late. I got stuck registering..... Ah, please treat me well. I like soccer and um, yeah.” he says, nervously, eyes sweeping across the class from left to right, right to left.
His eyes sweep until they land on something, somewhere, someone.
Is he staring at me?? Xiumin thinks to himself but soon dismisses the thought. How ridiculous.
Mr. Lee motions for him to take a seat and get into the lesson. Lu Han walks to the middle of the class, same row as Xiumin and sits down at the only empty seat, next to Yubin.
Curious, Xiumin cranes his neck forward, just slightly and aims his view past Kyungsoo and Yubin. He just about makes it.
With Kyungsoo’s big head in the way, he barely manages to make out the pointy fringe of Lu Han’s honey blonde hair. The fringe that gently brushes his well-defined brows. The fringe that hides the soft forehead that later becomes Xiumin’s favourite kissing spot. The fringe that draws attention to two circles south of it. His eyes. Two big, walnut-shaped pools of dark brown that later stare so intensely into Xiumin’s that he feels he’s going to start catching on fire.
But that later, is for later.
That later, is after their first official meeting, which doesn’t go as smoothly as Xiumin hoped it would. It is after their first outing with a group of friends. It is after their first soccer match. It is after their first date. It is after their first fight. It is after their first week together, as a couple. It is after their first breakup and their second first week together. It is after their late nights out, lying under the starry sky. It is after their random cups of bubble tea and crazy noraebang sessions. It is after they decide that hey, this is something more than friendship.
This is it.
A happy ending? No, not quite, not yet.
Alas, this later is before their first night away from each other. It is before their first tears fall. It is before they realize that things don't always work out as planned. It is before he realizes that the new guy isn't all he's made out to be. It is before they realize happiness isn't infinite. It is before Lu Han lets out the beast and Xiumin can't be saved.
