University of Iowa Student Government to clean storm debris

The University of Iowa Student Government is organizing volunteers for two storm cleanup initiatives this Saturday, April 22.
In conjunction with the Iowa City Public Works Department, volunteers will remove storm debris from the city’s Ralston Creek and Riverside Drive areas. In the aftermath of last week’s tornados, many University of Iowa students have contacted the University of Iowa Student Government (UISG) requesting volunteer opportunities. Following UISG’s Thursday cleanup at Iowa City’s Hickory Hill Park, the city asked UISG and its student volunteers to assist with other cleanup efforts.
“This is an amazing opportunity for fellow students to support and serve the city that so many of us call home,” said Mark Anthony Dingbaum, Volunteer Coordinator of the UISG relief effort. “Iowa City has done so much for the students of the University of Iowa and it is time that we return the favor.”
To assist with the Ralston Creek cleanup, volunteers should meet at the Iowa City Civic Center at 8:00 a.m. Those interested in the Riverside Drive cleanup can meet at the parking lots just south of the Burlington Street dam and Hydraulics Lab at 9:00 a.m. Volunteers should bring any rakes and brooms available to them. They are advised to wear long sleeves, pants, closed-toe shoes, and gloves.
Since the storms, UISG has been coordinating University volunteer efforts. In addition to cleaning the city, UISG has been collecting and distributing toiletries and clothing, as well as providing temporary housing information and other services.
