~ Prologue ~

Yunho's POV:

A regular walk from work, a peaceful walk from work. It felt like any ordinary day, except for the fact that I had to take a different train station home because they’re was an accident at the other one. I looked both ways before crossing the street and jogged over to the other side. It was 5 pm in the afternoon. People were hurrying off home, but me, I was just going with the flow of traffic. A red light. I waited for it to turn green as I held onto my briefcase with one hand and a cup of coffee in the other. People might think its crazy for someone to drink coffee so late in the day, but me, I always drink it this time around.

“Why isn’t there any food in this bin? Hey miss, when you throw garbage away, would you at least think about others before you leave only the skin of the banana!”

I turned my head to the owner of the voice. A boy, a young boy at that, digging in the trash and yelling at a woman to throw proper, more edible food in the trash. Why would someone eat from the garbage in the first place? Unless that person was homeless, then I would understand, but blaming a woman for not throwing food in the garbage? There’s a word for people like that - good for nothing wasters I tell you.

“All you people listen to me! You all are selfish, self-centered people who only care about yourselves!.Not once do you think about people like me, not even for a second. I hate you all, I hate people!”

A homeless person would never shout like that to people, no matter how miserable his life is. All heads turned to look at the boy for a split second before they scurried off home. The light turned green. I walked across the street then towards the same direction where the boy was at.

“That’s right, just walk away. Just act like I’m not even here. Don’t even bother giving a damn about me!”

He was talking to me. I stopped in right then and there and turned around to face him. Why was he talking crazy? Is he sick or something? Seriously, everything he said made absolutely no sense, well … for the most part that is. I bent down to the ground where he was sitting and asked, “What's you’re name?”

“Jae - Joong” he spoke slowly as if I had a hard time understanding things.

“Well JaeJoong, why are you sitting here, eating from that thing?” I asked pointing towards the trash.

“I live here” he simply answered.

I don’t know if I was hearing things, but I think he just said he lives here. I looked at him questioningly, “what do you mean? Why don’t you live at home with you’re parents?”

“My parents?" he scoffed, "I don’t have any. Those stupid bastards left me all by myself. You think they care? You think anyone cares? No one cares, not even you!”

This boy was so intriguing; I just had to press more questions. Believe it or not, I suddenly got interested in everything he was telling me. “How do you know I don’t care about you? If I didn’t I wouldn’t be here right now talking to you. Isn’t that right?”

He gazed at the ground, feeling a bit flustered, “well … I don’t need you to care for me. Just go away and leave me the hell alone!” he turned away from me and crossed his arms like a little child.

“Then tell me, why did you’re parents abandon you?” I asked with a sweet smile.

He had tears in his eyes as he answered, “why? Why did my parents leave me? Look at me, I'm stupid! Why would anyone be proud to have a retarded son!” he cried.

An audience of people turned to look at us, but I didn’t care. I looked at the boy, shock written all over my face from what he just told me. This boy, this poor, young boy … was retarded? No wait, retarded is such a harsh word. This boy was … mentally disabled? I found it so hard to believe. I was so shocked I was at a loss of what I should even do.

My first instinct was to take a hold of him in my arms and cradle him gently ... so I did.

"Nobody cares, nobody cares at all!” he cried into my suit.

“Shh, it’s ok. Don’t cry. I care, I care a lot about you.”

This caused JaeJoong to cry even harder. “I’m sorry; I didn’t mean to make you cry more. I just …” I didn’t know what else to tell him.

He pushed me away and wiped his tears, “no, if you’re gonna leave then I don’t wanna hear that you care about me!” he yelled and covered his ears with his hands like a little kid. “I don’t wanna hear it, I don’t wanna hear it, I don’t wanna hear it …” he kept repeating to himself rocking back and forth on the sidewalk.

“Ok, ok, I get it” I said, taking his hands away from his ears, “But listen to me, I want to take you home and I want make sure you’re ok. I’ll help you because I care about you.”

I expected him to hug me, thank me even, but instead, he laughed in my face. How does a boy go from crying one minute to laughing the next?

“Ahahah, that’s the funniest thing I’ve heard all day. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but I’m about to die any day now. I feel so worn out and helpless so if you really do want to help I think it’s kind of late for that.”

“I’m being serious. I do want to help you, and with the right medication and nutrition you’ll be as good as new.”

“I knew it! You think I’m stupid don’t you?” he yelled at me and knocked over the garbage can. “I hate you! Get away from me!”

“Listen to me” I spoke to him in a sterner voice, “I never once thought you were stupid. When I saw you just now, I never said to myself ‘oh there’s a really stupid teenager, let me just walk away from him and carry on with my own business’. No, I never thought that. Instead I came here to see if you’re ok and I find out you’re really sick. If you really don’t want my help then I’ll just leave.”

I got up from the ground and began to walk away. I walked slowly at first and began to increase my speed little by little. Although I knew inside my heart that even if the boy wouldn’t come to me, I knew for a fact that I would go back to him.

“Wait!” I heard someone yell from behind. I turned around and JaeJoong came running to me at a very unstable pace. When he finally got to where I was standing, he collapsed in to my arms.

“Ok” he breathed out heavily, “I’ll … go with you.”

Then he passed out.
