~Chapter Six~
JaeJoong’s intense stomach pains woke him up the next morning. He quickly staggered out of bed and ran to the bathroom to throw up in the toilet. He sat on the tiled floor for a good thirty-seven minutes before he was able to freely get up and move around again. He rose from the ground slowly and walked off towards the kitchen to get a glass of water.
He sat down on a stool and sighed as the pain progressed like a roller coaster. Just when he thought the pain was going away, it came right back and hit him hard. He figured the pain was simply because he hadn’t eaten since forever. JaeJoong struggled then to get himself some breakfast and gulfed it down hastily.
He groaned out in pain and clutched his stomach, noticing that nothing he did made a difference in his condition. He also didn’t like the idea of having such intense stomach pains while he was pregnant. He bore with it for a little while until he made the decision to call his doctor when he felt he couldn’t take it anymore.
“It hurts really badly” JaeJoong whimpered.
“Does it hurt in the middle or lower part of your abdominal?” his doctor inquired.
“Mostly in the lower part” he said sinking down to the floor slowly.
“Did you try eating?”
“Y-yes.”
“And it still hurts as bad?”
“Uh-huh.”
“Why don’t you come down to my office and let me have a look at you.”
“Ok, I’ll be there as soon as I can.”
After ending his call with the doctor, he called Junsu and asked if he could come over to watch Na Young for some time while he went to the hospital.
“Is everything alright hyung, you don’t sound too good?” Junsu asked.
“I’m fine, j-just feeling a little pain.”
“Is the baby ok?”
“I guess we’ll find out soon enough.”
“Hang in there hyung, I’m on my way right now.”
“Thanks Su.”
JaeJoong realized Yunho had gone off to work over two hours ago when he gazed up at the clock. He didn’t like that fact that he was home alone by himself like this with no protection nor care. Luckily, Na Young was there to keep him company.
He strolled over to the little girl’s bedroom and sat by her bedside, caressing her hair soothingly as he watched her sleep.
He layed his head next to hers and gently pecked her lips with his own. JaeJoong adored Na Young so much; he couldn’t imagine life without her. She was everything he wanted in a daughter, and he could only hope he was everything she looked forward to in a mother.
Na Young shifted in her sleep suddenly, startling JaeJoong. He hadn’t meant to wake her up so early and quickly took his hand back carefully. The sleeping angel rose up from her pillow and smiled when she saw JaeJoong lying down besides her.
“Morning Umma” she said cheerfully.
He smiled at her, “morning baby.”
She looked at him, crouched down on the floor, and got out of bed and went to sit on his lap. JaeJoong wanted her to get up from where she was because she only increased the amount of pain he was feeling, but he pushed that feeling aside and wrapped his arms around her.
“Uncle Su is coming to watch you for a few hours while umma goes out to run some errands, ok?” JaeJoong told her.
She nodded her head and braced back against him, “umma, why can’t I come with you?”
“Because I go to places where little kids like you aren’t allowed, but the next time I go out we’ll go together, hmm?” he asked nudging her shoulder.
“Ok” she sighed.
“I love you” he said kissing her hair.
“I love you too umma.”
They stayed in the same position they were currently in and waited like that patiently for Junsu’s arrival.
*~*~*~*~*~*
At lunch time, Yunho decided to spend it with Changmin at a café they use to hang out at years ago when they were younger.
“Any luck finding out Kibum’s address?” Yunho asked.
“As a matter of fact, I did. I found it yesterday stuffed inside my suitcase. Now all I need to do is track down his footsteps and we can ‘accidentally’ meet up together somewhere.”
“Sounds more like a creeper to me.”
“Well if it’s the only way I’ll ever get a shot with the guy then a creeper I’ll be.”
Yunho laughed, “As the saying goes, the first step to getting the things you want out of life is to decide what you want first then going after them.”
“Hmm, that’s a pretty smart saying, where did you hear that from?”
“… I just made it up actually.”
It was Changmin’s turn to burst out laughing at his friend’s nonsensical behavior. “You must be in a really good mood today. I haven’t seen you this happy since, well … ever.”
“I am in a good mood for a reason I don’t know. It just feels great to get out of the house for once. Don’t get me wrong, I love spending time with Jae and Na Young, but it’s been a while since I’ve had this much freedom.”
“Sounds more like jail to me” he scoffed.
“That’s the responsibility you have when you’re married with kids.”
“Hey, since you said you’ve hadn’t had this much freedom for a while, how about we go karaoke tonight, just me, you, and the guys from last night?”
“I don’t know, I mean work is beginning to pile up on me and -”
“Come on Yunho, it’s just for one night. You can spare a night for me can’t you?”
Changmin stared at him with his prominent set of eyes that were practically begging him to say yes. Yunho tried to ignore them, but he just couldn’t.
“I guess I could, for one night?”
“Yes, one night.”
“Ok, just one night.”
“Ok?”
“Ok.”
Changmin grinned happily as the food arrived at their table that exact moment. His life, he thought, couldn’t be any more prefect than it is now. Although he loved food a lot, he wanted something more, something that could put his heart at ease and mind at rest.
He just had to wait for the right time.
*~*~*~*~*~*
“Sorry I took so long to get here hyung, are you alright?”
JaeJoong limped to the kitchen where his car keys laid, “Just … my stomach hurts. I’ll be back from the doctor’s in about two hours or so. The list of emergency numbers is on the fridge and if you need anything call my cell or Yunho’s. I’ll see you later.”
“Wait, you’re not driving to the hospital by yourself when you’re like this” Junsu said snatching the keys out of his hands.
“I’ll be fine Su~” he whined.
“You always say you’re fine when in fact you’re not. I’m driving you to the hospital whether you like it or not and me and Na Young will be right there waiting for you until you come out and we hear some good news” he stated firmly.
JaeJoong smiled weakly at him, “thanks, for everything.”
“Don’t mention it, now let’s go” he said leading his brother out the house first with Na Young following them from behind.
After buckling JaeJoong and his niece in the car, he got in the driver’s side and accelerated away from the curb.
*~*~*~*~*~*
“Uncle Su, how long more do we have to wait, I’m getting hungry?” Na Young pouted.
Junsu sighed as he checked his watch again, “alright, let’s go to the vending machines and see what they have to eat.”
He took the little girl by her hand and escorted her down the hallway, making two right turns and a left until they finally reached a vendor.
Junsu got her a small bag of cookies and two bottles of water for the both of them. He carried her back to their seat in front of the room JaeJoong was in and they continued to wait.
Junsu felt shaky the whole time, wanting reassurance that his brother and baby were alright.
*~*~*~*~*~*
“Now tell me, does it still hurt after taking the medication I gave to you earlier?” the doctor asked.
JaeJoong nodded.
“The same pain as before of did it ease up a bit?”
JaeJoong shook his head, “it hurts the same.”
The doctor stopped to think for a moment on what could be the cause of his patient’s distress.
“Could it just be abdominal discomfort every pregnant person feels?” JaeJoong tried giving a reasonable explanation.
The doctor shook his head, “pain like that never lasts this long, it has to be something else. I think we need to do another sonogram to check your baby’s condition, just to make sure everything’s running smoothly like it should.”
JaeJoong nodded and began taking off his shirt as the doctor left to get the equipment ready. The man came back in a few minutes later took a seat besides JaeJoong, squeezing out a transparent-colored lotion in his palm and massaging it over his stomach gingerly. He then brought out the medical equipment and glided it over his abdominal.
The man looked carefully at the screen, studying it for a good minute.
“Oh my …”
“W-what is it?” JaeJoong asked worriedly.
His doctor ignored his question and continued to stare at the screen, gliding the equipment over the lower part of his stomach and paying close attention to every detail he saw.
“This is so …”
“What’s wrong? Is there something wrong with my baby?” JaeJoong practically yelled frustratedly.
The doctor turned to him slowly, “Honestly, I’m not really sure how you’re going to take this, but …”
He explained to JaeJoong what was going on and also the reason for his stomach pains from early this morning up until now. JaeJoong’s mouth dropped all the way down to the floor as he was in completely shock.
Neither him nor Yunho was prepared for what was about to come.
*~*~*~*~*~*
“I hope I was able to help with all your question and best of luck to you and you’re husband both” the doctor said, shaking hands with JaeJoong as he was leaving.
“You did, thanks a lot.”
He turned his back towards the man and approached Na Young, lifting her up in his arms and planting a gentle kiss on her cheek. The pain he felt before was now completely gone for the day, and he couldn’t feel any more relieved than he felt now.
“How’s the baby hyung?” Junsu questioned cautiously.
JaeJoong shook his head at him, “I’ll tell you everything at home.”
And he left it at that.
*~*~*~*~*~*
“God hyung, that’s kind of …”
“I know, and I’m kind of nervous to tell Yunho.”
“Don’t worry; I’m sure he won’t think of it as anything bad.”
“It is bad Su” he sighed.
Junsu patted his shoulder, “it’s getting late, I should go.”
“Ok, thanks for coming today, I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
Junsu blushed and pushed his brother’s shoulder playfully, “hyung~.”
JaeJoong smiled as he embraced the latter and bid farewell to him. After shutting the door closed, he went to pay Na Young a visit in her bedroom.
“Want to help umma cook dinner?” he asked by the doorway.
“Sure” she answered brightly.
This was all he needed; JaeJoong didn’t need anything else as long as he had his daughter besides him … and Yunho, wherever he was.
*~*~*~*~*~*
“Hey guys, let’s have a karaoke contest” Changmin suggested.
“Sounds like fun” his group of friends all agreed in unison.
“Good, me and Yunho can be on a team and -”
“Nah, that’s too boring, you guys are always on a team. Let’s change it up a bit this time” Donghae interrupted.
“Fine, what’s your proposition?” Changmin urged.
“Yunho will be on my team and Kyuhyun is on yours, deal?”
“Deal, but we get to pick the opposing team’s song to sing.”
“Fine by me.”
Changmin scanned though the song list and chose C.N. Blue’s ‘I’m a Loner’ for them.
“My favorite” Yunho said gleefully.
“Great, then let’s begin.”
*~*~*~*~*~*
“Looks like appa won’t be home for dinner again tonight” JaeJoong stated dismally. “Let’s eat without him, hmm?”
Na Young shook her head, “no, I want appa here too.”
“But, Na Young, it’s late already and you need to -”
“I don’t care, I want appa here with us” she said stubbornly.
This was the second time for the week Yunho’s pulled this kind of stunt on them. JaeJoong felt for Na Young though, she hadn’t seen him for practically three days. She probably missed him a lot.
“I’ll tell you what, I’ll give appa a call and see where he is and tell him to come immediately so we can eat together, ok?” JaeJoong suggested.
“Ok.”
He advanced towards the kitchen to call Yunho’s cell there. He dialed his number over four times, and all four times Yunho never once picked up. JaeJoong angrily slammed the phone down and inhaled and exhaled deeply.
After cooling down, he approached Na Young with a smile.
“Appa said he has a lot of work to do and won’t be home until eleven. He also said to go ahead and eat without him, so let’s do what he says, alright?”
She looked down at her food and picked up her spoon slowly, reluctant to eat having an incomplete family present at the table.
JaeJoong watched her, feeling a bit troubled. He felt that recently Yunho and him have both been neglecting Na Young for a while, and he was extremely guilty about it. He wanted things to be right again, before Changmin came into their lives.
*~*~*~*~*~*
JaeJoong wasn’t surprised to hear the keys opening the front door at 11:45 pm. He stood up slowly from the couch, and went towards him as he entered the house, looking as fatigued as ever.
“Hey Yunho” he greeted as he pecked his lips.
Yunho was a bit unresponsive, showing no reaction at all.
“Hey Jae” he yawned wearily. “I’m going to bed now, wanna come?”
Without waiting to hear an answer from him, Yunho proceeded straight to the bedroom.
“A-actually Yunho, there’s something I wanted to talk to you about.”
“Can it wait till tomorrow Jae; I’m really tired right now.”
“I-it can’t” he muttered.
Yunho slid off his shoes and kicked them aside somewhere near the dresser. He layed back on the mattress and shut his eyes closed.
“I-it’s about the baby” he stated in an attempt to get his attention, “I went to the hospital today because I was in unbearable pain and the doctor said -”
He stopped midway when he heard Yunho’s heavy breathing, signaling he was already asleep.
JaeJoong crossed his arms disheartened. He really wanted to tell Yunho the news about their baby’s condition, and if he didn’t care about that then it was obviously clear that Yunho didn’t care about him either.
JaeJoong looked down at him as tears escaped his eyes, feeling both lousy and uncared for.
“Congratulations, your officially the worst husband ever Jung Yunho."
