Hi, I'm still alive.

Mar 03, 2006 15:10

Well, I finally collected the lyrics to those ship songs. Plus I added on - "Sister Golden Hair" by America is now tied with "Hangin by a Wire" by Gordie Sampson for the H/L song from Harry's PoV.

Perfect Romance by Lynn Miles:
This is, in my opinion, one of the most fitting songs I've found. I imagine Ginny singing it when she realises her feelings for Neville (post-HBP).

I see you so clearly now
Though you’ve been right here all this time
It’s a cliché, but it’s a perfect fit
You know the one: love is blind

Cause I’ve been looking so long for the perfect romance
That I did not see the forest for the trees
I got lost, and I broke like a twig, but sometimes
It’s okay to be brought to your knees

Are we okay?
Is it too late?
Are there strings that we cannot undo?
If my teardrops make a river
We could swim up to the moon, just me and you

Cause I’ve been hurting so long for the perfect romance
That I could not taste the honey for the bees
I got stung, and I cried, like a baby, but sometimes
It’s okay to be brought to your knees
To your knees

And I’ve been waiting so long for the perfect romance
That I did not see you right in front of me
I got tired, so I gave up, for a while, but sometimes
It’s okay to be brought to your knees
I got tired, so I gave up, for a while, but sometimes
It’s okay to be brought to your knees

She’s Like the Wind by Patrick Swayze:
I imagine Neville singing this about Ginny at the Yule Ball. I think it's especially appropriate because of the references to "the breath on my face" and "her body close to me" - that can mean a lot of things, but if you get your mind out of the gutter it can be dancing.

She's like the wind through my trees
She rides the night next to me
She leads me through moonlight
Only to burn me with the sun
She's taken my heart
But she doesn't know what she's done

Chorus:
I look in the mirror and all I see
Is a young old man with only a dream
Am I just fooling myself
That she'll stop the pain
Living without her
I'd go insane

Chorus

Feel your breath on my face
Your body close to me
Can't look in your eyes
You're out of my league
Just a fool to believe
(Just a fool to believe)
She's like the wind
(Just a fool to believe)
Just a fool to believe
(She's like the wind)
Just a fool to believe
(Just a fool to believe)
She's like the wind
(Just a fool to believe)
Just a fool to believe
She's like the wind

(Just a fool...)
(She's like the wind)
(She's like the wind)
(Just a fool...)
(She's like the wind)
(Just a fool...)

Lighthouse Heart by Jimmy Rankin:
This is a song I could see Neville singing to Ginny. It's sweet, and I especially like the bit about not wanting to be her knight in shining armour. I love the "knight in rusty armour" idea for N/G.

I wanna be your lighthouse keeper
I wanna be your beacon in the dark
When your ship rolls in to dangerous waters
Let me be your lighthouse heart

All around this little island
Angry waters rumble and roll
The winds are filled with cruel intentions
And when they cut right to the soul

Chorus:
I wanna be your lighthouse keeper
I wanna be your beacon in the dark
When your ship rolls in to dangerous waters
Let me be your lighthouse heart

I don't want to be nobody's captain
Or play the role of Noah's ark
I don't want to be your knight in shining armour
I never meant to from the start

Chorus

When your ship rolls in to dangerous waters
Let me be your lighthouse heart
Lighthouse heart
I wanna be
Lighthouse heart
Lighthouse heart

Crashing and Burning by Fred Eaglesmith:
This is Ron singing to Hermione after her date with McClaggan. They both hurt each other, but I think Ron imagined Hermione being very happy with Viktor and then McClaggan, while he just got hurt. And he remembered she said she was going to ask him to the party, so he might have resented her for leading her on (there's a bit in this song about the girl being dishonest).

Well it's always got to work out for you doesn't it?
Everything's just got to be fine.
When you see your old boyfriends on the street,
They all say hello and you're so sweet.
Well I guess it ain't gonna be like that this time.

Chorus:
'Cause I'm crashin' and I'm burnin', I'm going down in flames.
I'm crashin and I'm burnin', and you're watching me,
You're just watching me.

And you like to talk about honesty
Like you just invented the word
'Til all your silly lies
Are left just spilling from your eyes
And I don't believe a single thing I've heard.

Chorus

Don't tell me that you're sorry, don't tell me that I'm wrong.
'Cause this is your favourite story, you've known it all along.

Chorus

Map of my Heart by Lynn Miles:
This is what I imaging Hermione telling Ron after that crazy fight with Lavender and McClaggan was over. I know I've put in a song where Ron says he's hurt and another where Hermione apologised, but I do believe Ron did hurtful things too. They both owed apologies, and it just worked out that the apology song I found is one I imagine Hermione singing.

I drew a map of my heart
I painted in melancholy blue
And the biggest room is empty
And it’s waiting for you
You can see where we’ve gone wrong
How our paths twist like vines
How the valleys are so dark
And the hills are sublime

Chorus:
And I know I hurt you bad
And that this is not enough
And that hearts are usually red
And the edges are too rough
Well I’m trying to make amends here
And I don’t know where to start
So I’m giving you this map of my heart

This map of my heart
I’ve drawn every single scar
And when I close my eyes
I can feel exactly where they are
I drew a big room for forgiveness
And a room for forgetting
I drew a great big room for mercy
And the biggest for regretting

Chorus

You can hang it on a wall
You can hide it in a drawer
But one thing you should know
Is it won’t show you what’s in store
So if you choose to tear it up
And you walk away from me
I guess I’d understand
Cause it’s got no guarantee

Chorus

Sister Golden Hair by America:
I imagine Harry singing this to Luna. He talks about how he hasn't seen enough of her lately (she got left behind in HBP), but that doesn't mean he's forgotten about her. Now that he has to worry about the Horcrux hunt, he'd really like her support. I also like the image of the line: "Will you meet me in the air?" Luna spends so much time "on the moon", I like the idea of them meeting in the air. This song asks the girl to meet the singer in the middle - the air is the middle between the ground (where Harry lives) and the moon (where Luna lives).

Well I tried to make it Sunday, but I got so damn depressed
That I set my sights on Monday and I got myself undressed
I ain't ready for the altar but I do agree there's times
When a woman sure can be a friend of mine

Chorus:
Well, I keep on thinkin' 'bout you, Sister Golden Hair surprise
And I just can't live without you; can't you see it in my eyes?
I been one poor correspondent, and I been too, too hard to find
But it doesn't mean you ain't been on my mind

Will you meet me in the middle, will you meet me in the air?
Will you love me just a little, just enough to show you care?
Well I tried to fake it, I don't mind sayin', I just can't make it

Chorus

Hangin by a Wire by Gordie Sampson:
This is another one I imagine Harry singing to Luna. In the first verse, he gets frustrated by her refusal to take charity (turning down the offer to help find her books). Then he goes on to tell her being normal and having friends isn't all it's cracked up to be, and he loves her just the way she is.

There’s something about you looks different now
These rhymes and riddles I can’t figure out
Are you smiling, are you crying? Lady I can’t tell…
Hey pretty lady, won’t you tell me where it hurts?
How can I help you if you never say a word?
You just hold your head like the queen of the universe

Chorus:
It’s a curse, it’s a shame
Everybody knows your name, but not what you’re made of
I don’t want you to change
Cause the world outside your frame ain’t all it’s cracked up to be
Tell me what do you see when you’re looking at me?

What’s on your mind, what’s going on inside your head?
Did I say something you wish I never ever said?
Cause you’re hangin by a wire; I’m hanging by a thread
And I don’t wanna be the one who let you down
And I don’t wanna make it worse, for crying out loud
And I don’t wanna be just another face in your crowd

Chorus

And I wanna steal you away, steal you away, steal you away…

Chorus

Snow in June by The Northern Pikes:
This one was slightly more difficult. I imagine Luna singing it to Harry, but it doesn't all work. Maybe you have to hear it - the song seems H/L when I listen to it but not so much when I just read the lyrics. It just gives a general vibe of Luna talking about how things are changing. It's post-HBP - Harry's stressed out about the Horcrux hunt and Luna just wants to make him feel better. It switches briefly to Harry's PoV in the middle when it says: "I am sorry, oh so sorry, for leaving you behind" - unless that's Luna saying she knows he needs her support and she's not always there for him. I'm not sure. I just felt right to me when I listened to it.

My perfect life may deceive me tonight
Realize, overcast skies
A humble man may just finally fight
Realize, frustration
Now and then, it seems to happen time to time
Snow in June

My perfect life may deceive me tonight
Forgive me; I haven’t been myself lately
I may survive if I don’t jeopardize
What you mean to me
Now and then, it seems to happen time to time
Show you off, and hope things work out just fine, tomorrow

He’s burning up, this dear friend of mine
He’s swallowed up with blue concern for those who live his life
I’m sorry, oh so sorry, for leaving you behind
He’s burning up, this dear friend of mine
He’s all screwed up
He wants to run and hide
But at the break of day, he’s off and away
He dreads what he might find
I am sorry, oh so sorry, for leaving you behind
He’s burning up, this dear friend of mine

So please don’t cry, you live on the moon
Smile with me when it snows in June
There’s room for two; we’ll live on the moon
Smile with me when it snows in June

Now and then, it seems to happen time to time
Snow in June

I Can’t Tell You Why by Lynn Miles:
I see this song as being Luna/Hermione from Hermione's PoV. She talks about how she's making the change from R/Hr to L/Hr, and she doesn't know why or how but she thinks with Luna everythings going to be all right. The line: "I can't tell you why" means she doesn't understand her relationship with Luna but she doesn't need to. And I like relating the "big old fools moon" to Luna and Hermione feeling like a fool for being with her but loving her anyway.

There is a thin line that I am crossing
There is a quarter that I am tossing
And an empty dance card
And a big old fool’s moon
And a falling star

It was falling; I can’t tell you why
I am stalling; this is do or die
You can’t make me testify
Cause I can’t tell you why

Well there is a heart here
That once was broken
By knowing nothing
No words were spoken
And you came waltzing into my parlour
And you were shining

You were shining; I can’t tell you why
It was timing; this is do or die
You can’t make me testify
Cause I can’t tell you why

It’s getting quiet; it’s getting late now
And I could stop dancing, but I don’t know how
Cause you are standing where I can see you
And there’s a fire

There is a fire; I can’t tell you why
You inspire this do or die
You can’t make me testify
Cause I can’t tell you why

No, I can’t tell you why

Your Place in this World by Gordie Sampson:
This is L/Hr from Luna's PoV - she tells Hermione she hopes she gets over her stress and enjoys herself. Luna lives that way, and she wants it for her girlfriend. And "scope-creeping the moon" can mean spending time with Luna. Hoping she makes her heartaches into history means Luna hopes Hermione gets over Ron (R/Hr have broken up).

Hope you get back ten times what you give me
Face the facts, without taking them so seriously
Turn down the lights, spend a couple of nights
Just counting the stars, and scope-creeping the moon

Chorus:
I hope you find your place in this world
And you spend your time like it was your money to burn
Enjoy the ride; the thrill of the chase
Till you find your place in this world

I hope you learn the golden rule, then break it
When it’s your turn, let the man behind you take it
Make protest signs for the non-believers
And share a bottle of wine with Lennon and Jesus

Chorus

I hope you make your heartaches into history
Don’t play the games, but take all of the victories
Don’t throw your stones and break your bones
Just trying to find out what you already know

Chorus

Aluminum by the Barenaked Ladies:
This is Harry talking to Ginny - after he's come to his senses.

How, in every visible way, you shine
As if the stars in your wake align
Almost impossible to malign

But just below where you shine, you burn
Although I know it, I never learn
Just goes to show that I can't discern

Chorus:
Aluminum to me
Aluminium to some
You can shine like silver all you want
But you're just Aluminum

Illuminating just what you want to show
You'd never rust, but I'd never know
You can't be trusted, I can't let go

Chorus

Every time you're here, I forget
When you leave, you leave only regret
Every time you're here, I forget
Everything

You're so lightweight, how can you survive?
Recycling moments from others' lives
You're not as precious as you contrive

Chorus

It’s Gone by Lynn Miles:
This is Ginny talking to Harry, and saying she's over him and wants to move on (post-HBP - she means it this time).

If you’re looking for my heart
It’s where it’s always been
It’s right here
I don’t know what to say because I can’t fool myself
I shed a tear

Chorus:
And I don’t know where it goes when it goes
And I don’t know anything anymore
And I don’t know what I thought we had
But it’s gone

So if you’re looking for a light
You won’t see it in my eyes
But I wish you could
So turn the other way
Sometimes I think this heart
Is made of wood

Chorus

Looking at the Moon (For the First Time) by Lennie Gallant:
I imagine Harry singing this song to Ginny. This is the "H/G changing into H/L from Harry's PoV" one - he's telling her he's seeing Luna in a new light now and can't get back his feelings for her.
Yesterday, they called for sunshine
Nothing came down but rain
What’s wrong with the weather these days?
Why’s this world in such pain?
And why have you stood there freezing?
Waiting outside my door
You know I try to let you in but
I couldn’t unlock it before

I’m looking at the moon for the first time
If you know what I mean
It's ducking in the clouds for a moment
Winking at me it seems
I know I've been dancing with you
At arm's length for too long
I never stepped on you toes
But I broke your heart every song

Chorus:
In love you gotta give it all, you can't hold back
If you're not completely in the game
You'll fly right off of the track
In love you gotta give it all, you can't hold back
I'm opening up, I'm opening up
I'm opening up my heart to love

There's a waltz that's just for dreamers
You can dance your whole life through
Caught between romance and passion
Somewhere out there in the blue
Coming in from the cold now
And everything seems okay
The weatherman says there's gonna
Be a break in the rain today

Chorus

I'm looking at the moon for the first time
If you know what I mean

Similar Features by Melissa Etheridge:
This is H/G changing into H/L from Ginny's PoV. Ginny sees Harry getting closer to Luna and doesn't like it. I imagine her accepting it later, but here she's just complaining about it. I love matured!Ginny and hope to see her come back in the seventh book (she disappeared in HBP), but this song shows her after she's been hurt (and Neville could comfort her?).

Chorus:
Go on and close your eyes, go on imagine me there
She's got similar features with longer hair
And if that's what it takes to get you through
Go on and close your eyes it shouldn't bother you

You never had to wait for nothing in your life
I guess wanting me must have been a steel blue knife
And when night after night the scent of passion would linger
You had to have the jewels wrapped around your finger
Now you keep running down the road in your midnight state of mind
Curiosity kills if you can't read the signs

Chorus

Dancing with the wall made you bitter and sweet
There ain't much you can do when they just lay it at your feet
But you could tell by the song I wanted to be the one
Did you listen again when the damage was done
Now the paint's still wet in your do-it-by-number dream
Are you gonna tell me how it felt, will you tell me what it means

Chorus

Was it want with no desire?
Was it smoke with no fire?
Did I say it doesn't rip me apart - I lied
I'm sorry dear, my hands are tied

Chorus

All I Need by Matchbox Twenty:
This is H/G changing into N/G from Neville's PoV. He and Ginny are just friends (while Harry's off hunting Horcruxes), and he's asking Ginny for her support.

Everywhere someone's getting over
Everybody cries
And sometimes, you can still lose even if you really try
Talking about the dream
Like the dream is over
Talk like that won't get you nowhere
Everybody's trusting in the heart like the heart don't lie

Chorus:
And that's all that I need
Someone else to cling to
Someone I can lean on
Until I don't need to
Just stay all through the night
In the morning let me down
Cause that's all that I need right now

Everywhere someone's getting over
Everybodys life is someone
People still use other people with a crooked smile
And all around the world there's a sinking feeling
Out there right now someone's feeling
Down on themselves and don't know why
Every night

Chorus

And life ain't no beauty show
We don't know where tomorrow ends
And when we're sad
It's kind of a drag

Just stay all through the night
And in the morning let me down
Cause that's all that I need
Yeah, that's all that I need
Yeah, that's all that I need
That's all that I need right now
Right now

Heartaches, Heartbreaks by The Northern Pikes:
This is H/G changing into N/G from Ginny's PoV. Actually, it's more someone talking to Ginny. She's upset that Harry's gone off hunting Horcruxes with Ron and Hermione, and she feels he let her down (there's a bit in this song that says: "A promise made, was broken", and I think Ginny would feel somewhat betrayed). She knows Neville's there and will stick by her, and she should open up and put her arms around him (as it says in the first line of the song). This would take place during Ginny's sixth year, so her "last vacation" would be the summer after HBP. The song is basically telling Ginny to trust Neville.

Why don’t you open up, and put your arms around him?
He knows you’ve had bad luck
But you’ll be glad you found him
What difference does it make what happened long ago?
The love that you forsake
Could save you from your soul
Sharpen your pencil now, I’ve got a test to give you
And if you answer right, the teacher will forgive you

Chorus:
Heartaches, heartbreaks
Heartbeats keep on racing
The rhythm within him
The time that you’ve been wasting
Seeing with eyes so green, focusing through a window
An image fresh and clean inside a human rainbow

She smokes a cigarette, and thinks about herself
How quickly we forget our memories and ourselves
In twenty words or less, describe your last vacation
How much fun you had, and how much aggravation

Chorus

Am I just talking to the wall?
Can’t you hear a word I say?
Is there anything that I can do?
A promise made, was broken
Some things are better left alone
If I could have a dime for every lonely person
I’d be a millionaire, and they’d still be alone
Attack the problem now, and find the right solution
Bring up your best brigades and start this revolution

Chorus X2

Flames of Love by Lynn Miles:
This is a general ship song. Basically, whatever you ship, you can imagine one character in the ship singing it to the other. It's an excellent song by my favourite singer, and I think it can apply to just about all ships. I'd highly reccomend to anyone that can actually find Lynn Miles stuff, which may be difficult. Folk music is underrated, and this song deserves lots of credit.

Show me your mystery, show me your shame
Tell me your secret code
Forget every lesson that you ever learned
About the middle of the road
Let's break the bank, and the rules and the chains
Do everything that we ever dreamed of

Chorus: Let's build a fire and let it get hot Let's go down in the flames of love

Read the contract all the way through
Use your blood to sign your name
Take a look in the mirror, remember this moment
You're never gonna feel quite the same
I will show you my concience, show you my shame
Every hurt that I am made of

Chorus

There you go - some great (and, in the cases of most of them, underrated) songs for my favourite Harry Potter ships. I haven't been to the forums of the fandom lately, but I do have two completed fics (an H/L one-shot and a chaptered N/G fic) ready to be uploaded once I can get to the library. They're on a disk and my computer's disk drive is broken. I haven't posted in a while, but I am alive and lurking in the fandom. I may post again at some point, but for now I'm happy to lurk.
