He just guard your body and all?

It's taken me almost a week to post about this, but I figured I would wait 'til (almost) everything was settled. So... I got a new (to me) car. My mom found it and bought it for me, and last Saturday I went and picked it up from New York, leaving my old car (I'll miss you, Hyacinthe :'() behind. I've got him all registered as of today, plates on, sticker in window, etc. And it only took one trip to the DMV, which probably wouldn't have taken an hour if the guy doing my registration wasn't moving so slow he was practically going in reverse. (And if someone hadn't decided to interrupt him in the middle about his time sheet, leaving me standing there for about five minutes while he dealt with that. WTF?!)

So, yes. New car. 2000 Subaru Legacy station wagon with a bit over 156,000 miles on it. It's a good car, with only one major issue that no one wants to help me resolve. But we'll get to that in a moment. First...

And if you don't get why he's named that, well, why haven't you read Burndive yet?

(For those who haven't read it, there is a character in it whose name is Corporal Timothy Carl Sidney, and he is a marine. The soljets (essentially marines in space, but they think they're better than marines), when ragging on him, call him a maroon. So when I heard that I was getting a maroon car, well... he named himself. And head_shrinker said, "Hahaha you should name him Sid!" and I responded, "HAHAHAHAHAHA I already did!" So yeah.)

But the big issue that no one wants to help me resolve? The fact that somehow the key I have for him only operates the ignition, but does not open any of the doors to the car. I have a remote lock/unlock thing, but I don't trust it. The battery WILL die at the least opportune moment. So I called the local Subaru dealership and they said, "Well, the ignition key and the door key are the same, so one of them had to be changed for it to not work, so if we cut you a key, it won't work either, so you need to find out which was changed." Which I can't do, because I got it from a dealership (who I called, and they said that the key I have was the only key they were given) who got it from a dealership who got it from its original owner.

So... I can't have a key that opens my locks? Brilliant. I'm probably going to call the dealership back and just tell them, "Look. Cut me a key based on the VIN. If it doesn't work in the locks, I have a spare ignition key. If it does, problem solved. Either way, I'm paying for it, so just do it." If it doesn't fix the problem, well... I don't know what to do from there. There has to be a way to reverse engineer a key, right? Otherwise I suppose I would have to get all of the locks changed, I'm assuming, and that'll probably cost more than the car, with my luck. The dealership I bought it from did say that it was far more likely that the ignition key was changed than all three of the locks (since the key doesn't work in any of them). Or I suppose it's possible that all three locks are messed up, but somehow that seems improbable to me.

Whatever the case, it's really, really annoying to not be able to lock my car and be sure that I'll be able to get back in afterwards.

car, sidney
