Friday - I moved into my apartment. Its great and the last teacher sold me her expensive kerosene heater for not too much. My futon was delivered this morning and the guy even took away some of the nasty, stained old futons that were taking up closet space. The place has all hardwood floors, a loft for the futon, and came with a kotatsu and a pink leather loveseat. How kickass is that? Also my toilet is a TOTO, so it has a huge panel of stuff that I don’t know what it does yet, and the seat is heated, which is glorious. It’s also really cool how efficient it is - when you flush, there’s a faucet on the back that starts automatically (cold water only, of course), so you can wash your hands and refill the tank at the same time! Now on to the ghetto stuff - I don’t have a stove, just one portable gas burner connected to a gas line that just sits out so I have to turn it on and off every time I cook, the closet is huge and has lots of room for futon storage, which I’m not using, so its wasted space. The space for clothing is….not enough. So I need shelves or drawers or something. Next and maybe most important of the ghettoness - the microwave AND the toaster oven are broken so I have to replace one of them so I can cook things quickly. I heard in Japan there are microwaves that have toaster oven and real oven settings so that will be great!! I’ll be able to make cakes and stuff if I can get a used one (because I’m not sure if I can afford a new one…). I did my first load of laundry since leaving America and omfg my washing machine is ghetto too! It would be great if a plumber could work on it but I have no such plumber. Instead there is a hose that comes out of the wall, and once again I have to turn on the water every time I want to use the washer. BUT! The hose is connected to nothing!! So every time I need to fill the washer, I have to hold the hose in the hole at the top of the washing machine to fill it (if you don’t hold it in, the hose comes out and sprays water everywhere). The washing machine needs to be filled 3 times per load, and there isn’t even an option for warm water. I think that’s just how Japan is tho. At least my sink has hot water. Oh yeah, speaking of that, no dishwasher either. And no clothes dryer, we line dry everything here, or use one of those nifty round hanger thingies. I haven’t been able to hang anything outside because it rains a lot right now.
