SCA stuff and a major concern

Been a while again since I posted here. Life is good, baby and Fran doing great. Jobs OK and the weather...well its finally like summer used to be when I used to come here as a kid.

Went to Sealion war and had a pretty good time seeing folks. I find myself really demophobic lately, I think it has to do with swine flu, so I didn't want to hang out in BigBlu with folks on saturday night. I just didn't feel it. I think it was the folks I kept seeing sneezing (most likely from allergies...) but they bugged me and I didn't want to sit around for the bardic. I miss Megadeth and the MacBeans. I guess I always will....

One thing I saw at the war that amazed and dismayed me were the 'stealth' pikes. These things are just so wrong that I'm shocked that they were even allowed onto the field. Fibreglass pikes are bad enough; they don't bend, they get used one handed, they hit way too hard and are easily made by folks who shouldn't be using them in the first place, but these small tipped stealth weapons are beyond a doubt, dangerous.

I thought a lot about it. I remember accidents on the field with regularly sized thrusting weapons coming up into people throats or armpits and I wondered about how much worse it would get with a non flexable, small diameter weapon hitting the same way with more force. I can only conclude that it could lead to serious, perhaps even fatal injuries.

The worst that I was ever hit was at 30th year by a knight who threw himself over a small wall and hit me with his entire bodywieght at the end of his 9' fibreglass pike. It cracked my sternum, knocked the wind out of me and rendered my ill and sore for six months. This was with a normal sized 'beer can' head made out of tape. I can only imagine what would have happened with a latex dipped 1.5" stealth tip. Most likely it would drive pieces of my sternum into my heart and kill me. Literally.

I have written a letter to the Earl Marshal of An Tir. I am going to write another to the Society Marshal, I am also going to send letters to every Barony asking that the Barons not allow these weapons to be used in battle. I believe that Gerhard would agree with me about this one. I think everyone involved even in the slightest way with SCA combat should write letters of concern about this before its too late and someone gets hurt really badly, or killed.

I finally have a cause.
