Dear Fate,
Why do you tempt me so?
You entice my heart, lure my soul
-into thinking my words are something of worth--
then give me the knowledge,
to exercise full-fledged caution:
I did not know, I could not see
What has been unjustly done to me.
But now with the intelligence I harbor
I face the evil death of cold disappointment
Oh, lovely Fate, answer only this:
What part of my life still goes amiss-
For you to torment with misery's blood kiss?

Yours forevermore, in a cage I lay, for you to kill me today,
the soul of what is hereinafter, conformity among the dead.
