“So why does he have to hide it from me? If he is going around with that chic, I would be pretty pleased.” Amy quipped. Dee looked at her, as she handed her the steaming coffee mug. “Hmmmm” she pondered aloud, wondering which way to lead this conversation.
“But you don’t look pretty pleased.” She ventured.
“Of course, I am not. He’s my best friend, ain’t I suppose to know?” Amy fumed, just like the steam that wafted from her mug.
“Okay. Agreed” Dee acquiesced “But the point here is,” She paused for effect “Are you his best friend?”
Amy took a sip as she let the information seep in. “Maybe” she whispered to herself “Maybe not” She said aloud. “I mean that’s what this proves right?”
Dee smiled at her reassuringly. “Or maybe it’s not that important an event for him to share.”
“Oh!” Amy exclaimed. “Hmmm”. Amy picked up a cookie from the table and nibbled on the edge. “He’s yet to figure it out. Or maybe I ain’t important enough to share. But I bet something is brewing.” She paused to ruminate.
“Thanks anyways” Amy faked a smile.
“You are welcome” Dee picked up a cookie for herself. They sat side by side on the couch, legs tucked in, enjoying the silence that ensued.
“So how are things at your end?” Amy asked finishing the last bite of her cookie and dusting off the crumbs.
“Routine. By the way may I ask you something?” Dee scrutinized her face.
“Yeah, go ahead” Amy replied with a raised eyebrow.
“Why is this bothering you? He’s just a friend right?”
“Of course” Amy laughed “It’s ridiculous to think two of us together, we are way too similar. Are you forgetting that opposites attract?”
“Really? Is it that ridiculous? Not worth giving a shot?” Dee persisted.
Amy stopped laughing, “Well..er..it will never work out.” She got lost in her thoughts.
“All I am asking is why is this bothering you? If he is going around with someone, he can, isn’t it? Without telling you, unless it’s official.”
“Yeah” Amy said uneasily. “Of course, I should back off. Not expect such things, how stupid of me.” She blabbered. “Everyone needs their space.”
Dee giggled as Amy squirmed in the couch.”Oh! Sweetie. You are such a nutcase.”
“Of course, it’s result of the company I keep.” Amy threw a cushion at her. They both erupted into a chorus of laughter.
Relaxed and exhausted, Amy put a head on Dee’s shoulder, “Jealousy is such a terrible emotion. It makes you so miserable.” Dee caressed her hair strands, as she replied, “And it could be beautiful too if only you realize.”
“What?” Amy moved back to look into Dee’s eyes.
“That Love is born out of it.” Dee replied knowingly.
