two weeks later...

clea is doing *great*!! that vet was an idiot! i took her in to see her regular vet, dr. polumbo, a few days later for a second opinion on the xrays and what i thought was an alarmingly high dosage of prednisone. clea got much better over the weekend, other than some nasty side effects from the pred, so i wanted to have her in for a recheck with a vet i trust. sure enough, dr. polumbo was astounded by how much pred they put her on. i had already started dropping the dosage a bit starting on the third day because clea was panting so hard, it was making her uncomfortable. good thing i did that! that high of a dosage in a dog her size could have caused permanent damage to her liver and heart!! she already has a heart murmur, that's the last thing she needed! the doc also took a look at those xrays and said everything was looking healthy and normal. the only reason why her colon was dropped a bit is because her bladder was empty. as for her calcium level, that stabilized, at least the pred did help that, but her level wasn't as high as that other vet made it out to be. she didn't take clea's albumin level into consideration. the calcium was still high, but it wasn't as severe as it was treated. as for her incision site, there is *no sign of any new growth*!! woohoo! 10 weeks after being diagnosed with an aggressive cancer, and she's still going strong. the margins of that biopsy may have been clean, they only looked at a small sample. there's still a lot of hope for clea still. :)

the other day we took her to scott park for a hike. she was climbing the sides of a ravine like a little mountain goat!! she's acting like her old self again. :) we have her on a macrobiotic cancer diet, which means we're cooking for her. she loves it! it seems to be doing something good for her! the ingredients include herbs and spices that are known to increase her body's cancer fighting abilities and boost her immune system. her vet has approved this, and feels that this would be the best course of action for clea. chemo and radiation might buy her some time, but it won't be quality time. the diet and the supplements we're giving her could give her just as much time as the chemicals, if not more. her vet has seen some really promising results with other animals on this diet. so, yay! the pook has not been defeated!! she's a tough grrrl!!
