[PoT] Survival of the Fittest (Yukimura, Sanada)

Notes: Yukimura has the most beautiful plants in Kanagawa. Also the most frightened. (With apologies to messrs Pratchett and Gaiman. Yukimura is a believer in the Crowley Method.)
The plants were beautiful. Yukimura had them arranged along the windowsill of his room in the hospital, and Sanada could only assume that the nurses let him keep them because Yukimura could be both unspeakably charming and unspeakably frightening, sometimes almost at the same time.
"They keep life a little more interesting," Yukimura told him, and if he was able to find things to entertain himself in hospital then this seemed like a good thing to Sanada.
The plants on the windowsill were not, he began to notice as weeks wore on and he visited again and again, always the same ones. Every now and then one would vanish, and be replaced by another -- generally an even more attractive one. Sometimes there was just a gap.
"Aah," Yukimura said when he noticed Sanada looking at the space where a big, purple-flowered plant had been living until the weekend. "Sometimes plants just can't cut it here. It's unfortunate but... inevitable."
He directed a sad little smile at the row of plants, and Sanada thought he must be going mad -- for a moment, he swore he saw the plants cringe away. Surely it wasn't possible for pot-plants to look nervous.
Perhaps his grandfather was wrong and getting up at four in the morning really wasn't doing him any favours.
