I NEED a cunning plan, internets! Today I got an email:

Dear etcetera-cat,

I hope you don't mind me contacting you out of the blue. I'm a researcher working on a documentary about fan fiction for BBC Radio 4. The aim of the programme is to show what a rich area it is and to show how it is changing how people think about writing and the media as a whole.

As part of this, we are looking for 'ordinary' writers of fan fiction to talk about the role fan fiction plays in their lives. We are hoping to be representative of fan fiction writers as a whole but also to challenge some of the mainstream perceptions about the fan fiction scene. We are also covering Slash and erotic fiction.

I was interested in contacting you in particular because of your fanfics of the Valdemar universe, especially in the light of Mercedes Lackey's complicated stance on fan fiction.
We are particularly interested in those who have personal story that connects with their interest in fan fiction. To give you an example, I've read in the past about people who perhaps met a partner through shared interest in fan fiction, or a disabled person who writes disabled characters into established fandoms where there are none. And so on..

The programme is presented by the novelist Naomi Alderman who knows and reads fan fiction and is a supporter of the scene.

Is this something you might be interested in? Or do you know someone who might be?

We are very happy to discuss using a pseudonym or pen name for anonymity if appropriate.

We are recording over the next month. If you're interested in hearing more details, please get in touch at xxxxxxxxxxx
Many thanks,
xxxxxxxxx

Now all I need is someone to provide me with an opinion beyond my current admixture of "argh argh arghy argh if I can't see you, you can't see me" panic and "but I'm not THAT interesting" stupefaction (with a healthy topping of "but I wouldn't have anything intelligent to say!" and a rich sauce of "but I'm not fannishly out, except for how assorted RL people know my pseud, but at least they're all from the internets and I can continue to COMPARTMENTALISE THE SHIT OUT OF MY LIFE").

In case you couldn't tell, I'm completely incapable of acting like an adult.

Also on DreamWidth, comment where you will!

dorkiness ensues, omg, ways in which i fail, wtf
