Fandom Appreciation Challenge 2010 (Day One)

Mar 02, 2010 23:37

As organised by
china_shop, explainations here.

The challenge for day one involves reccing three stories that have arisen from challenges and, after cursing the fact that whilst my delicious tagging system appears to be weirdly anal, it is apparently not weirdly anal enough to make panfandom searching easy. I predict much pointless futzing at some point in the future.

AT ANY RATE, three stories, from three fandoms:

Shot to the Heart by
elementalv (Due South). One of the Team Whimsy entries from the last round of ds_match (and this is where I shunt you in the direction of both rounds of the match and shout READ THEM ALL THEY ARE ALL AWESOME at you until you thump me one), in which RayV is forced to live a groundhog day style looped existence until he works through some issues with his personal life. I love this story because the characters are all so very much themselves and also because the universe really is an asshole.

The Ursine Therianthrope Diversion by Kaneko (Middleman). Firstly, my reaction to pretty much anything Middlemanish in nature can best be summed up as Heart Shaped EYES. My reaction to this story can best be summed up as HEART SHAPED EYES OMG!!1! For one thing, it reads like it should be an episode of the show, complete with temporally undecided bylines and crackpot happenings, and for another thing this story gives us the Middleman, past and present, broken and mended and hi, HEARTS. Also, Wendy completely kicks ass.

The Eagle Conspiracy by Kezya (Thursday Next Chronicles). This is yet another instance of Heart Shaped EYES (which is actually the common thread for everything I rec, aha), and it's a delightful, witty and extremely clever story that sees Thursday come up against the bane of any Tolkien fan's existence, "why didn't they just use the eagles to fly into Mordor?", and the havoc such a line of reasoning could have on the Bookworld. The appearence by Sauron is a thing of pure and undiluted awesome.
