Generally, I act on what people say, even when I know what they say to be wrong. To be clearer, when people say things about themselves, I function under the assumption that it is true even when I highly intellectually suspect or emotionally know what they say to be wrong. ("I hate him!" and "I just want to be a lawyer" are two examples.)
1) Is this the right thing to do, do respect one's outward wishes and function that way>
2) Is it better to be clever and appear to function that way, and push them towards what you believe to actually be the case?
3) Is it good to confront people about what you believe to be their conflicted desires? Confront, in this case, is not meant harshly, but rather intended to imply bringing it up as tactfull/lessly as you desire.
