bbcSherlockians take Manhattan

Yesterday was lovely and full of fandom. Because of LJ, I was alerted to the sherlockbbc meetup happening nearby, a gathering to first see Benedict Cumberbatch act the fuck out of Third Star, and then to have lunch.

I'd been almost totally unspoiled for Third Star, and was happily and sadly impressed. Happy, because the movie is pretty exquisite and never hits a dull moment, and sad because it tears your heart out of your gaping chest and feeds it to you.

Benedict is beyond beautiful, honed down (in the live-streaming international social media Q&A afterward they said he ate greens, ran early in the mornings, swam in cold water for the look), and the other three actors are equally scrumptious eye-candy. The whole film was made to be screencapped and slashed, and there's a deep painful cuddly profound sort of bromance that goes beyond subtext.

It's just real, and it aches. The fact that the most poignant look at male friendships I've ever seen was directed by a woman is just the icing on the Third Star cake. See it if you can, demand the DVD.

And thanks for the last song in the movie, James Vincent McMorrow's "Follow You Down To The Red Oak Tree" [youtube video w/perfect sound] (and thanks to the lady who told me his name!); Seriously you guys will thank me for clicking on it, too. Pleasepleasejusttrust.

Lunch was wonderful and communally fangirl. We'd also managed to adopt some cool stray tumblrettes on our way out of the theater, and it was fascinating to hear about the other ways that fandom is blossoming in other pockets of the internet. I felt profoundly older, understanding the basic ins and outs of tumblr but not the ways in which it has been assimilated by the new generation of fans, who have grown up much more connected than we ever were.

But then I remember what LJ meant to me when I was 18, and what it and the connectivity of the internet means to people who are that age and younger and older, and how everything just rolls ever on for us. I'm actually really thrilled that fandoms are flourishing so fast and fiercely amongst our younger guard. Don't keep calm; carry on.

It was fantastic to meet people from this supportive community. Much as our friends and loved ones might attempt to understand fandom and the world of fic in particular, there's always something magical about getting to talk to others who truly understand and are invested in the interest. When you have a table of eleven and every person is primed to answer the same questions with enthusiasm, when you can casually mention a story or a theme or character or prop and everyone gets it -- it's a feeling past awesome, and makes me very thankful that communities like this exist.

What did the poor fangirls of past eras do? Write circular letters to each other, I suppose, but you couldn't even comment.

Props to aubre_rose  for organizing and for her fabulous blue scarf.
