Basically geeks or losers that are always on the computer, playing something like World of Warcraft, or even hackers, tend to live in their mother's basements. They tend to be losers who never had a girlfriend before, who never got independent on their own, and etc.

Did you see Die Hard 4? Basically the character Kevin Smith played, he is living in his mother's basement.
