I wish to God and any power that exists that I had heard the first half of this story. Sadly, by the time the guy got to the register, this was all I heard him say to his unimpressed female companion:

"I didn't make as much money as I could have, because of the attorney's fees, y'know. But I do have the letter from Elton John saying he's sorry that it happened."

Best half-heard story ever.
